I think I am missing something on step #2. I have a black layer, but what am I supposed to do with the gradient tool? Because no matter what I do I seem to just get a normal black-to-white gradient. Which makes sense, as the difference between black and black is black, and between black and white is white.

Is there a masking, selecting, or other step in here that I am not seeing?

I tried it and at some parts it seemed a little vague but I figured it out

Songwind, drag the blend tool across the layer several times. Providing the mode of the blend tool is set to difference and that the drags you do are at least slightly different each time (should be automatic considering human input usually can't exactly mimic actions) it should produce some interesting results.

Pixelated, it's a nice outcome using simple steps. I would recommend extending the description on step 2 though. Although it may be a common trick used by the more experienced Gimp users here, it's not the kind of information within easy reach and so some people are clearly going to get lost at that point.

Considering that your tutorial result effectively revolves around the trick it seems only natural to ensure you make it clear what to do. :)

Oh, right, sorry about that Songwind, thanks for the help Fatal. I'll add some more detail later today.

And BTW, I'm also sorry but I made a mistake in Step 5. After making your focal layer and colorizing it, you should set it to SCREEN, not Overlay. I will edit that up the top.

Thanks once again Fatal, I forgot to say that several gradients should be made. I will add some more detail too.

EDIT: Well, I edited the tutorial, added some more details to Step 2, and fixed the mistake above.

This is a tut where the text has really enhanced the graphic...instead of taking away from it!

@wbool: No problem!

@Riptide: Nice result! Great flow and depth. The 'focal' looks really cool, like neon bars or something.
Great result Riptide again, thanks for following my tutorial!

@Mario: Sorry, I didn't see you posted your result! Your result isn't bad either! I like how they look like waterfalls. This sig works better with a single colour, but It's great to see you're experimenting. Nice result to you as well!

I'll post both your results up.

I'll probably do this again eventually, because the outcome didn't come out as nice as I'd like.
