Therefore it seems that 2.7.1 would be an appropriate release using the 2.8 that was ready to go.......or even 2.6.9.....
GENERATE SOME MORE INTEREST......

Not need for a installer just a copy of the Gimp folder in Program Files (or wherever was installed) will work (the other folder in the user directory will be recreated at first start )

I've just done some searching and started downloading this one http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-w ... -setup.exe
This guy http://betafreak.wordpress.com/2009/08/ ... r-windows/ says that FileHippo has Windows binaries (no comipilng needed) but it doesn't look like the latest version.
Which gets us to the fact that it's very hard to obtain an information on what really is the latest build. The only place which can provide such information is http://sourceforge.n...gimp-win/files/ Am I right? > GIMP + GTK+ (development rel.) branch?

the dev version may change on a weekly even daily bases and are here on git.gnome.org/gimp
you may found instruction for compile but for Ubuntu here http://www.gimpusers.com/news/2009-10-1 ... 4-910.html
and that should be adapted foe Windows or other OS
i always delay my attempt to do for myself so i can't give much more details except then in windows you will need at first MinGW and MSYS installed

The best I achieved is saving windows position at windows maximized. GIMP won't remember that of course but the window will be almost maximized so at least it starts in a constant position ant it will be easy to hit the "maximize" button each time.

I'm running 2.7.2 from there, and I'm having some minor problems with plugins.
When using GMIC and selecting a filter:
WARNING: Plug-In "gmic_gimp"
(~/.gimp-2.7/plug-ins/gmic_gimp)
called deprecated procedure 'gimp-drawable-is-valid'.
It should call 'gimp-item-is-valid' instead!
Everything is still working, just a warning in my error-console dock
A few other filters/scripts/plug-ins are reporting the same error, with one exception:
Gimpressionist just crashes. No reason, just a solid crash.

Probably the worst thing in 2.6 gor windows was that even when minimized the GIMP's toolboxes stayed on top of every other application. That was so annoying. And it kept getting worse for example when image save preview has been turned on.
Now the only thing I had to do was to go to Paint Dynamics - Dynamics OFF. I also moved the Tool options as a tab where layers and channels are to keep my Toolbox narrow.
I also did few things which I'm surprised I haven't done before:
- disable rulers by default
- disable scroll bars by default (I use middle button to pan anyway)
- use the TAB key to quickly hide/show all the Docks
Everything's smooth now. I'm glad I gave 2.7.1 a try!
