I'm trying to create a faded line but as a GIMP newbie I've been producing some really messy solutions. What I want is a solid black line 8 pixels tall and tapers off gradually to about 2-3 pixels. Solid black and then as it tapers off, I want the color to fade to a grey or charcoal grey. 4 inches in length total.

How do I do this??

I don't really know of an easy way to do this. What I typically do is to create a thick horizontal line on a transparent layer, autocrop the layer, than use the Perspective Transform tool to narrow one end of the line (by moving the corners closer together).

You can also get a tapered line by using "Filters->Distorts->Curve Bend" on thick horizontal line; or by manually creating a quadrilateral path and stroking it.
Everybody makes their own fun. If you don't make it yourself it's not fun, it's entertainment.

Alright, so how do I create a thick horizontal line then? As long as I have been using GIMP, I have yet to figure out how to create a simple straight line (whether it be horizontal/vertical). Do I need a brush to create that???
