GIMP 2.6.4 is a bug release in the stable 2.6 series. That is, there are no new features, just bug fixes and adjustments.

Linux: http://www.gimp.org/downloads
Windows: http://gimp.org/windows/
Mac: http://gimp.org/macintosh/

gimp.org also recommends that "Users and Developers update to the latest GEGL version 0.0.22"
(http://gegl.org/#_download). It is not clear at the moment how this is handled for various platforms.

LOL; I still have installed GIMP 1.2.4, 2.2.17, 2.4.6, as well as 2.6.3 for several different reasons. All work without any issues. :)

Is it possible to remove the little toolbar, the box that you see when you load GIMP which let's you open or create a new file?

Yes.

Add a line to your gimprc containing:
    (toolbox-wilber no)

Everybody makes their own fun. If you don't make it yourself it's not fun, it's entertainment.

No

BUT is better do when is a major change as example next major change will be from Gimp 2.6 to Gimp 2.8
Then a good idea will be also manually delete the gimp folder left by the unistaller in C :Users(or for XP , Documents and Settings)/yourname/gimp.)

But No is no needed for minor changes of version, if not in case of trouble.
And in case of trouble is essential remove also that "gimp" folder left by the unistaller

Please be kind enough to provide the exact statement for the "(toolbox-wilber no)" line in the gimprc file.
Thanks!

Saulgoode already did. Add the line (toolbox-wilber no) (exactly like that, with parentheses) to the end of the gimprc file, restart GIMP, and the wilbur image will be gone. If you are having trouble, make sure you are changing the correct gimprc file (so you e.g. don't change one belonging to an older version of GIMP, should you have such config directories lying around).

(we want our image to be "gimped", not "photoshopped"; the difference being one can't tell when an image has been properly gimped :) ).

I note that Gimp Portable 2.6.4 is now available for Windows....It installs over the previous version without removing the previous...

The program mounts nicely in my hard drive and runs in parallel with Gimp....

The problem with Help (ver 2.4) still remains that after installing Help it cannot be found.....might be a problem as simple as locating it correctly...edit....well that was simple, under preferences, in Help, you need to click on Use Locally Installed Help......
.
The other problem which it shares with Gimp is that the main image window does not open full screen....and requires a click.....

I find they seem to operate identically....and the updates are just a few days after Gimp is updated....nice to upgrade Gimp and have Gimp Portable running the old version.....

I have just installed Gimp 2.6 for Leopard through Macports. However, when I use Gimp I cannot enter text into any text field of Gimp (such as file names, the text editor etc.). In the terminal this is the error code I received:

gimp
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "/tmp/launch-kCr7VP/:0".
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "/tmp/launch-kCr7VP/:0".

(gimp:78013): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to find default local directory monitor type

Does anybody know how to fix this?

If you have specific questions on the use or function of GIMP, please ask them in the Help forum. More people will see it and be able to offer help.
