3d effect? How to do this?

Hey, I am learning to use Gimp. Can someone tell me which software to use with Gimp to produce the 3d effect shown in the below images

Hmm, I dunno about the second one, but the first one seems do-able in just Gimp. I cant give you an exact tutorial, but it looks like you could make a shield out of paths, then use lots of white to transparent gradients to create the glossy look.

Second one looks like it was just a render, and not a 3d model honestly.

in a 3D app you could model the objects put a chrome shader on them and then render them
