@azamath

I like this a lot. especially the subdued colours and the light on the ground. Also the grass you have gotten to work really well I think; this feels very much like an oil painting in many ways.
The leaves work reasonably, they are very hard to do anyway. Possibly you could try to add even more branches and glimpses of sky in there, to break up the crowns a bit more. You have a very nice touch with the brighter green highlights in the tree, an idea would be to enhance them further by coupling them with a darker shade over their lower halves, to further increase the contrast and break up the "brush" strokes.

Glad to see you came back and tried this, and with such good results too! Hope to see you stick around longer. :)

Thanks for trying out the tutorial and if you don't mind supplying me with a thumbnail of your image I'd be glad to add it to the "hall of fame" in the first post!

The image host has been acting up. The images work for me now at least.

I don't know why they didn't work. Anyway, I re-uploaded all images again, so now they should all work yet again.

Very nice tutorial! Being a grad student, I don't have much time to devote to my hobby...but whenever I get the free time, I'm trying out GIMP. Here's my attempt (unfinished) at a landscape.

If you have any ideas on how to get rock-like relief for the mountain, I'd appreciate it. Thank you!

@scribbleink (nice nick)

Welcome to GIMPtalk!

I like how your tree came out! Is that a custom brush or work using the default ones? At any rate I think you really got the "messyness" of a tree down well there. By comparison the ground and river are very serene and well-ordered ... making quite the contrast in styles. Also the mountains stand out as somewhat artificial. It's not easy to make mountains look majestic. First thing you should do is start to make them a lot less like pyramids and make them much more even -- break up their sides in different patches of light and dark, add a peak or two, nature is uneven, similar to how you did with the darker patches in the grass to the right.
In this tutorial there is a section on how to add texture to the ground. A similar method can be used to "break up" the even surface of the mountains (once you have gone over them already as mentioned above). Do a search on google images for "rock texture" or something and follow the tutorial.

Anyway, this is a nice piece, hope you find time for more of the same!

I am trying this tutorial now, its a huge step from your 3. tutorial and I got stuck at part 4 - the grass. You say you use the paint brush to do each stroke/grass straw, but your grass seems so grained, as if you have it or done something different to it also. I tried applying random strokes here and there but I can't seem to get rid of that smoothed ground.

My grass so far:

Um, which one is my 3rd tutorial? You mean the forest background one from [this] list?
You have a good start with the grass there, looking fine. Consider the perspective with the road though, it should become smaller with distance.
It takes some work breaking up the lines making grass, you can try applying one of the animated crayon brushes to make your strokes even more irregular. But don't dispair, it's hard to get rid of the smooth surface completely. Later in the tutorial you will see that we apply a texture to really get rid of the smoothed look of the ground.

Yes, Im going through your tutorials from the top, I had my doubts on this one -might need something less detailed - but I am giving it a go anyway.

Oh crap, hehe, I hadn't even noticed the road problem, I was too focused on the grass. Thanks for the input, I will try the crayon brushes and try to fix the perspective of the road.

@Garfi

You have a point that this tutorial might be a step up from the previous ones and is probably more complex than several of those listed below it. The reason is of course that I did these tutorials in a very different order originally and the list is therefore somewhat arbitrary, but then again I never considered anyone would actually step through them in sequence. I think I will actually move this one a bit down in that case, it concerns building a complete scene whereas many others focus on smaller concepts.

I started all over and went for a more darker look, but I couldn't get the leaves to look good so I dropped them:

@Garfi

This came out pretty well! You got some nice light and depth in there. It looks like there is a foggy valley beyond. You have a very cold colour scale to the image, which fits with the misty background, with this kind of overcast light you have done right not to make any clear shadows. The yellow brushes make for a good variation, I also like that you followed my advice and added some purple into the rock colour. :) you could probably have made your colour choices even bolder to make the image more dynamic, but since the sky is overcast and the trees are barren, the generally muted colours do fit well with the moody feel of the image. Well done! I'll put it up in the "Hall of fame" at the top. :mrgreen:

Hi, I had posted a couple of replies to the Water In Nature tutorial, and got no response. I assume you must be busy with other things, and i'm not trying to be pushy, but could you please check out my posts there? I really want to learn how to make professional quality artwork, and any help you can give me would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance. :-)
