Dev version: GIMP 2.5.2 available

Some days ago the final tarball of GIMP 2.5.2 appeared online on the GIMP ftp server. The tarball is another intermediate step to the soon awaited stable version of GIMP: 2.6.

2.5.2 will be one of the last versions before GIMP 2.6.

If you want to try the developement build please make sure that you take a look at the backported WebKit package (for Ubuntu 8.04) that GIMP uses for its new and cool built-in online help browser. Sven Neumann posted the backports on his blog!http://svenfoo.geekheim.de/index.php/2008-07-16/webkit-rules/

no there is a sort of roadmap at least till 3.0

and time between stable releases should be (in theory) no much more of 6 mounths

Odd-numbered releases (the number to the right of the decimal point) are used to indicate development versions. While 2.4 is the current stable version, the developers are working on 2.5. The only modifications being made to 2.4 are to fix bugs, all improvements are being worked on in 2.5.

Once the developers are finished adding features and fixing bugs in 2.5, it will be released as version 2.6 -- the even release number ("6") indicating that it is stable.

After 2.6 is released, developers will start working on 2.7 (which will become 2.8 when development is finished).

Users of GIMP should stick with the even-numbered stable versions. The development versions change daily and often contain bugs as the developers add the new code.
Everybody makes their own fun. If you don't make it yourself it's not fun, it's entertainment.

Of course knowing that you may even chose to try

If so some additional care must be taken even if you want be able to run 2 different version of gimp

as example on linux may be better install the "beta" version under a different prefix (As example for me install in "opt" instead then in "usr" worked well for me )

For Win or Mac at the moment there are not installer available neither updated " how to" for build... in case in the future a windows install would be available i will suggest , in order to run alongside 2.4 and 2.5 to install a portable version of 2.4 instead then the usual, the portable seems less sensitive to conflict

but again if you do be aware that you are trying a instable version at your risk

2.5.2 will be one of the last versions before GIMP 2.6.

I'm a bit curious as to what the source is of this statement? Considering the large changes happening in 2.6 and the long development time before the last release 2.2 -> 2.4 ...

the gimp developer mail list...2.6 was planned for before end of july (,obviously is be delayed for some reasons)

when gimp 2.4 was realized was decided also to shorten time between stable releases, to about 6 mouths....But obviously that is a goal, or better a not imperative roadmap, in pratice unexpected problem may always delay the release...some projects are connected so a delay in one may delay all the others somehow related, and so the new release

Hmm, considering the number of bugs found in the 2.3 series up until version 2.3.10 or so, the unoptimized and, for large images unusable state of 2.5.1 (have't checked 2.5.2 yet though) and the myriad of new variables introduced by having a new Gfx engine (changes most of GIMP's internals completely), I would think 6 months is extremely optimistic for a new 'stable' release ... but time will tell.

I don't see a bug report about that size issue... I suggest you make one otherwise it may not get handled.

on 2.5 i had some problem only when i tryed to play with some of the "gegl operations"..(but then i can't complain if try unknown operations with random settings lead to freeze or even to a crash, i
n case i may just suppose that i used dumb settings so maybe they all work fine except error management in case of wrong user settings )

For the rest i did 't notice instability on 2.5

On 2.5.1 there is a noticeable 0.5 second delay every time you start a paint operation on a 3000x2480 image (A4, 300DPI), rendering it unusable for effective brush work. Since this is only noticeable for bigger sizes I assume it's merely an optimization issue, which is why I say GIMP GEGL is still far from final release.

I'll install 2.5.2 this weekend to see if the slowdown prevails.

Any slowdown issues with brushwork will most likely end up in my yard. The brushwork in GIMP has nothing to do with GEGL atm. Big brushes are an issue but they also were so for 2.4. can you tell me exactly a set of conditions when this becomes intolerable for you? and significantly slower than 2.4?

PS: Theres a known bug in using the New Image dialog for creating any DPI based image. It will give you a HUGE image instead of A4. So keep an eye on those pixels created.
