I've recently uploaded two new releases for Gimp 2.6.x for Mac OS X. They
are

Gimp 2.6.1 for Leopard / Intel

Gimp 2.6.0 for Leopard / PowerPC[/b]

You can download them from my site on

http://gimp.lisanet....e/Download.html

or directly from SF

I'm currently working on a Tiger / Intel version, so stay tuned.

Hello,
I saw a lot of questions on Gimp for Mac os X, thats what this tutorial is for!

There are 2 possibilities for running gimp under OSX: Using the X11-gimp.app, and AquaGimp
I recommend X11-gimp.app, because of the crashes, cursor and typing bug in AquaGimp.

*****************X11 Gimp************************
Pros:
* Easy download and install
* Stable version (2.2.11) as well as Release Candidate (2.4RC3)
* Looks good

Cons:
* You will need to install X11 window manager
* The bar on top of screen doesnt work
* You can choose between focus on pointer, or focus on click (both are a little bit annoying sometimes)
* You will have to double click to change tools et., once to activate the tools dialogue and once to actually select the tool.

Edit by Cyril:
There is a way to fix the double-clicking issue! Open Terminal.app and type the following:
defaults write org.x.X11 wm_click_through -bool true
Restart X11, and it should be fixed!

Download:
2.2.11 -> http://prdownloads.s...11.dmg?download
2.4RC1 -- No longer available
2.4RC3 http://www.nasendack...p-24-fur-macos/

*********************Native Gimp (AquaGimp)*************************
Someone made a Gimp version, what does NOT need X11, so maybe, there will be GAP on OSX in the future.

Pros:
* No X11 Needed
* Bar on top of screen works
* Plug-ins fully working
* Expose and the Dock fully work

Cons
* Only 2.4RC3 available
* May crash (rarely does)
* Standard theme clashes with Aqua OSX
* Some windows get lost under others

Bugs found:
* Typing is does NOT work (youll have to copy paste
* Cursor stays a black, noisy square whatever you do

AquaGimp download:
2.4RC3 -> http://www.nasendack...macos-ohne-x11/

AquaGimp is no longer available through the link provided by Aeps.
If you're interested in AquaGimp you will have to find a different link. (I failed at looking.) ;)

The straight translation even thought it doesn't make sense, when you click the link is:

I mess quite often times at this page and remove basically nothing.
Therefore it can be good that an old article is no longer available.

*********************Themes on the Mac*********************
To install GIMP themes, only the following simple steps are needed:
For AquaGimp:

Quote

1. Download the theme (good resource-> http://art.gnome.org/themes/gtk2/ )
2. There will be a folder with a lot of files, including "gtkrc", rename it to theme name (if it doesnt already have the theme name)
3. Open finder, go to applications
4. Rightclick Aquagimp , click show Packet Contents
5. In this folder go to:
Contents -> Resources -> share -> gimp -> 2.0 -> themes
6. Put the theme folder there
7. Start GIMP (or RESTART Gimp)
8. Go to Gimp -> Preferences
9. In the left pane, click Theme (3d from top)
10. The theme will appear in the list, click it

You're done :) (this is no quote, but its put in this frame for clarity of post)

For X11 Gimp

Quote

1. Download the theme (good resource-> http://art.gnome.org/themes/gtk2/ )
2. There will be a folder with a lot of files, including "gtkrc", rename it to Default (Or it will not work)
3. Open finder, go to applications
4. Rightclick Gimp , click show Packet Contents
5. In this folder go to:
Contents -> Resources -> share -> gimp -> 2.0 -> themes
6. Put the theme folder there

Acqua gimp...i may try it on my father PC , he uses Mac

Nice that somebody make available 2.4rc also for Mac, too bad that only 2.2,11 is available as stable version...quite a gap with 2.2.17.

@Photocomix
The toolbox menu is on top of the screen, not included in the screenshot tho,
On a Mac, the main menu, is put on top of the screen, for every program, but programs that run under X11, thats the the X11 one is in the toolbox itself,

found some bugs in Aqua though, I recommend X11gimp, as its a bit more bug free, some bugs are really annoying in Aqua

Does anyone have Aqua-Gimp? If so could you upload it to a fileshare and post a link, because a native gimp would ROCK. Then I could use the pressure sens. on my tablet!

Hi.

Who or where should I report bugs to?

I love this thing, but after installing it, and running it via x11, I've been having massive kernel panics on Mac Pro / 15.8. It appears it corrupted the kext files- I think. Anyway, can someone tell me where to post bug report?

I doubt there will be 2.7 for Mac, but I may be wrong. 2.8 should be out soon. They've released the 2.7 Source Code though, and people have found out how to compile it, but nobodies uploaded it that I can find =/

As soon as I get mod powers back, I will thoroughly and constantly update this thread. Right now I'm researching how to enable the use of the Command key instead of Control, which is something that's made GIMP unusable to me ata time. <_<

Nope, I doubt one will be released, I think they'll just wait until 2.8
