@graphix23

Wrong place to ask this question. You won't get an answer here. Make a new topic in the help forum (you need to give more examples for what you are aiming for too).

The only problem with some of these tuts, is that some of the image links within some of them are broken/no longer valid.

Hi. Is there a tutorial on how to use this Official Tutorial Index? Something that might for instance, explain the meaning of a tut, a sig, and explain what grunge means as it relates to GIMP? Other acronyms, abbreviations and/or non-standard English terms I see are C4d and Chaoscope.

Also, is there any chance of renaming some of the obscurely named tutorials into something that describes specifically what the tutorial teaches. For instance: "Another Tech Tutorial."

Finally, would it be possible to separately list any tutorials that are likely to be universally useful for a general user from those that provide some highly specific special effect? The former might include "Learning the Interface in 30 Minutes" and "Guide to Quickmasks" while the later contained things like making soap bubbles or a flower.

I'm so new to this, I can't even do an effective search. I learned a lot of neat stuff I might want to try once I've learned a few basics. I've reviewed the user's manual, reviewed the tutorials and tried to search. Found some of what I wanted in the user's manual. Unfortunately, the author(s) seem to think I know what they're talking about and tend to leave out little details.

I would really appreciate it if someone would just give me shove in the right direction re:

1. I have some jpegs the I want to make the background transparent. I've gotten as far as getting a path (right term?) around the render (right term?) and then it all goes to heck. I've tried about 30 times and haven't succeeded yet. Please point me to somewhere that will explain what I need to do next.

2. I want to join images side by side into one image. Haven't the foggiest idea where to start.

3. I want to download an avatar from my fledgling website, but don't have the slightest idea how. I'm new at that, too. Trying to learn the basics of web building.

Like I said, just point me in the right direction and the stupid questions should diminish. I picked one heck of a hobby to keep me busy in my old age.
Take Care and Be Well.

The forums are misbehaving so I am unable to provide a link to the appropriate tutorial, but it is called "How to remove backgrounds" or somesuch (I thought it was stickied but apparently not).

First, you need to have both files opened within the same image. You can do this by opening the first file and using "File->Open As Layer(s)" to open the second. This results in two layers placed directly on top of each other.

To position the layers side-by-side, zoom out enough so that there is a significant amount of "padding" around the images. Next, activate the Move Tool and drag the top layer into padded area beside the image. The top layer will disappear but you can still see its outline. You don't really need to worry too much about aligning it perfectly at this point; just drop the layer so its outline doesn't overlap the other layer.

The layer disappeared because it is no longer on the image canvas, we need to expand the boundaries of the image so that both layers are still shown. The easiest way to do this is to perform an "Image->Fit Canvas To Layers".

Once you have both layers visible on the image canvas, you can zoom in (if necessary) and use the Move Tool to align the layers more closely. The cursor keys can be very helpful for nudging the layer one pixel at a time (10 pixels if the SHIFT key is held down).

When you have the layers positioned properly, do another "Image->Fit Canvas To Layers" to remove any extraneous regions outside of the two layers.
Everybody makes their own fun. If you don't make it yourself it's not fun, it's entertainment.

Once you get your path around what you want to render(it should be a stock now if it has the background) press the enter key(that should create a selection). After that your done with the path so select the move tool and you shouldnt be able to see the path any more.Once that is done go to Select > Invert. Then press CRTL + X(I think or just go to Image > Cut.Or find the Cut option). That should make the background disappear.

However if it doesnt have an Alpha Channel then the background will change to the background color you have selected in the toolbox. To give it an Alpha Channel go to the Layers Dialogue, right click on the layer, then go press 'Add Alpha Channel'.After that repeat the above with the cutting and all that other stuff.Once you have done all that you should see a gray checker board pattern(that means that that area is transparent so thats a good thing). If you do then go to Select > None and your done :p All thats left is to save it or do whatever else you want to do with it.

If none of that works then feel free to PM me and Ill open up GIMP so I can give a better description of what to do.This is going off memory at the moment.

Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right place to post. I was looking for some HTML slicing tutorials and found this:http://www.gimptalk.com/forum/topic/How-To-Create-Image-Maps-For-Websites-2797-1.html, but it doesn't really cover what I'm looking for.

I have a very specific task assigned to me: I need to slice some images out of a PSD and into jpgs/pngs. I'm a web developer so I don't need Gimp to do the HTML code for me, I just need to "get" the images that I need out of the PSD. Since I'm completely stupid when it comes to design, I don't even know where to start. I tried following these instructions: http://www.websiterepairguy.com/ebooks/ ... Image.html, but I'm not getting anywhere either. For some reason not even the "ctrl+n" shortcut works properly: the new image is not getting the dimensions of whatever's in the clipboard at the moment, and worst of all I can't even make transparency work properly.

Anyway, I need some assistance and I was hoping somebody here would be so kind as to point me in the right direction. Here's a list of the things I'm having issues with:

1. As mentioned before, when doing selecting an area, then doing CTRL+c, CTRL+N the newly created image has the canvas' dimensions, not the clipboard dimensions.

2. When trying to "slice" (is that even the right term?) an image out of a PSD, it's not coming out with transparency. I think I'm turning off layers as I should, but still, I'm probably doing a lot of stuff wrong. Anybody has a quick tutorial for doing that?

3. How does the color picker work? I'm trying to get a color in the PSD and for some reason it's not picking anything. Keeps displaying black.

Thanks in advance, and -again- sorry if this is posted in the wrong place. I'll remove it and repost somewhere else if that's the case.
