Step 1:create a new image of any dimensions with any background. i used 420x300. choose a gradient of your choise and drag from left to right using the gradient tool (holding ctrl for a straight line).
step 2:you will need to make some new patterns now. simply open a new 10x10 image, and using the 1 pixel brush and the pencil tool, draw a line across the top of the square, and the left side of the square, like an "L", flipped vertically. save the image in your patterns folder in the share folder. mine is located in C:\program files\gimp 2.2\share\patterns or something like that. name the file something.pat (replace "something" with your own name for it)
now click edit->clear. select a new gradient (FG-BG) make sure the fg and bg colours are default (black and white) now select the gradient tool and drag from the top left to bottom right. make sure the bottom-right is the darker end. "save as" with a new name in the same folder.
step 3; Create a new layer. if you aren't lazy like me, give it a name. select the paint bucket tool and set the settings to "fill type:Pattern fill" and "affected area:fill whole selection." select one of your new patterns that you just made. fill the new layer. now fill with the other pattern.
note: if you cant find your new patterns, open your patterns tab or window and click the refresh button down the bottom, with the green arrows. when it loads your new patterns should be shown. if not check the folder to see if the patterns are still there.
step 4: lower the new layers opacity to 40% or lower or higher as you want.
step 5; merge your layers. now type some text using Visitor BRK http://www.dafont.com/visitor.font or a font of your choice. make it reasonably big.
step 6: make a new layer under your text layer. right click the text layer and click "alpha to selection" .
click select->grow and set to 5px or less depending on your font size and what you want it to look like.
step 7:click the layer under your text layer and fill it with black (inside the selection). do not merge the layers yet.
step 8:click alpha to selection on the text layer again. fill it with the same gradient you used for the background originally.
step 9:now over that, select white as your fg colour and set the gradient to "fg to transparent". fill from the top of the text to the bottom.
if you want lower the opacity on the gradient tool you can do that.
step 10:now do the same thing on the background layer, from top-left to bottom-right.
step 11;now duplicate the layer you used for the border of the text. merge all the other text layers (not the background or the duplicate). select the duplicate layer, make sure it is under the other text layer and run gaussian blur on it (20px).
Voila! you have your text. i hope this tutorial was helpful and that you could understand it.
