First off, you might remember me as a game programmer. That is correct, I am currently remaking a 2d game called annchienta, which is based on sprites and 2d art. All artwork for it is made using the GIMP.
So, I started enjoying making some sprites, and I decided to start this tutorial about it on my favorite GIMP site :l:
But this isn't just a tutorial. I invite everyone to post the sprites they made using this tutorial here, so I can use them in my game :h:
When you sumbit a sprite in this topic, you will also be added to a contributer list on http://annchienta.sf.net
Please note that the game on that site is the latest stable release, and the remake will be way better :h: I improved the battle system and graphics.
So, let's start this tutorial! I hope I can get a few people to contribute this way :l:
GIMP Setup and Tools
I have the GIMP setup like this:
Make sure you have the default 1px circle brush. Use the pencil tool. Open up this image:
It will help us to get the proportions right :h:
Zoom in a lot, so the pixels are visible. Make sure we are working with a 32x32 image. Then create a few more layers, as in the screenshot above.
Basics
Start off with a simple head. Note that the eyes are visible, but the mouth isn't. Take a look at the proportions image, and you should see the head goes in the lower part of the upper yellow area. When done, give it a skin color.

Hair
Hair is very important. As you see, it takes a large part of the sprite. With hair, you can give your character a personality. The hair should take the bigger part of the upper yellow area. Spikey hair, long hair, it's all possible. You can try the weirdest hairstyles.
( I decreased the head opacity for educational purposes here )
Torso
The torso goes in the orange area. It's usually pretty hard to make the torso look right, but after trying a few times, it should come out allright.

Legs and Feet
This goes in the lower yellow area. Legs are relatively easy to draw.

Note that the feet are just a brown line here.
Details
Well, you're free to add what you want. Have fun :h:
