Perhaps stupidly I challenged my friend who has been using Photoshop for 6 months to a sig battle against me, who has been using GIMP for nearly 2 weeks now. Unfortunately I think I got absolutely demolished , I vote for Flickr (my friend) definately :s: but let's put it to the vote. No rules, just siggy size (around 400 x 150 but changable).
Here are the pics:

EDIT: If anyone can tell me why I can never see my own pics, that would be great thanks :l:

They are both nice and both his effects and yours can be achived in either program, so it is not really a ps vs gimp..

flickys background is better, and the thing he put it up together, however.. yes.. however you have much better text and cutting (not really good but better than his ^^). so.. id say its a tie

but.. he has done it with ps, and 12 times more experience than you, so you won :l:

Why would getting photoshop help you make "good sigs"?

In my point...since i found out that gimp can pretty much do what Photoshop can do.
the only thing i see photoshop has going for it is the brush control,im sorry but having everything automated sucks you wouldnt really learn anything just be clicking buttons..if you use gimp theres a learning experince in it..atleast for me it has been

While that sig is still extremely good, it can still be done in the GIMP it is a matter of gradients and paths. If she drew the art, which is beyond awsome, that is also possible to do in the GIMP (of course, it still takes a lot of talent which I do not have).

However, in the end I do not discourage buying PS. I hope that you would at least continue using the GIMP on occasion. Photoshop isn't the "end all be all" of Image manip. products, although it is a fantastic program. Droz has PS CS2 (the current version), yet he uses the GIMP more.

Still, I have to admit, this thing is awsome.

This is kinda silly really. Gimp can produce sig that are just as great as photoshop. If you don't belive me take a look at some of the sigs Zip, Kytale, and quite a few others on this forum have created.

It has nothing to do with the program you use. It has to do with how much you are willing to study and learn the techniques needed to make great sigs. It also has do with the time you are willing to spend studying how to use the program!

The only reason people start running to PS is because people have written tons of tutorials about how to create a certian style of sig. What some of those people don't realize is Gimp can do the same thing. You just need to learn how to use it. This forum is a great start at that.

This is just my opion that is all. If you want to spend the money just to make great sigs I would suggest spending it on supporting Gimp and helping make it even better.

again, what others were saying, it's more of a contest between the creators, not the program. Gimp and PS are fairly equal, both have strengths and weaknesses, but in the end, it comes down to the artist :w:

Opponent(Probably the best Gfx maker on the forum that we battled at,he uses Photoshop CS2)

These are both from the battle me and him had,and he is probably the best gfx maker at the site.I beat him with my gimp creation, which was the upset of the year.

I have to say I prefer gimp > photoshop, and I have used both.
