I'm always in there, but I think we're in rather different time zones. :-) Even when I'm set as "away", I might be there. Try writing my nick then to "beep" me and I might hear it and switch to the right screen.

For example, if you want to check when people last checked in, use @seen nickName and it will tell you. If I'm in there (and I mostly am), and is away, you can check my away message with /whois Griatch , there you will see if I'm present at the computer or not. If so, writing my nick will have it beep here and I might notice you. :-)

That's something weird with your client program or computer setup in that case. All the bot does when you do @roulette is to reply to you like any normal user would. If there were a problem with the bot *my* server would be locking up, not your screen ...
Oh, and you can use @ as an alias for "Gimptalk-bot" it's a little shorter. :-)

Though w/o the bumps, this thread would have almost no activity (and that's sad)

It always takes some time to "establish" a chat room, so patience is required -- another need is for people to "just hang around" in there when they are online (you can always set yourself as "away" and set the client to beep you when someone writes your nick if you don't have the time to keep an eye at the chat all the time. I know I don't).
From my logs I can tell that activity is slowly picking up though. Even though I see many people logging on just missing each other because of the time difference. And others just logging in for two minutes before logging off because noone talked to them -- now that's just inexperience with public chats I suppose. I've missed a lot of people in there because they wouldn't give me five minutes to notice them. And because they didn't check my away message (\whois Griatch) and "beeped" me.
