Wow, I thought GAP would be really difficult, but you make it seem so easy. Thanks.

Welcome to the boards!

GAP is a separate program that you can download from the "Quick Download GIMP" link in the upper right-hand corner of the page. I believe it's about half way down the page. Once installed, you will then be able to see/use the video menu.

There are other posts on the board that discuss GAP usage/problems, so I would ask that you consult the "search function" to keep us from having to answer the same questions over and over again. However, if you're still having difficulty, please feel free to PM me. Just keep in mind, it may be awhile before I can get back with you as it's guitar playing night!

Hope this helps.

PKP,

Have you installed the GAP yet? The GAP (Gimp Animation Plugin) doesn't come standard with the GIMP, you have to download and install it after you have installed the GIMP (you can download it from the SourceForge.net. Once you have it installed, a "Video" menu appears as the right-most menu on the menu bar.

If you have a "Video" menu without an item for "Duplicate Frames" then you will have to provide more information about your setup because I have never heard of a GAP installation not having that available.
Everybody makes their own fun. If you don't make it yourself it's not fun, it's entertainment.

I followed this tutorial, but for some reason my gif comes out with thin black lines. I don't see these lines when I do a playback of the gif in gimp. So I'm assuming I don't have something set right when I save the gif. Any ideas?

Here's the gif: http://www.lando-lin...images/logo.gif

Thanks,
Paul

Looks to me like this is an effect of "Dithering", try these settings when you do the next animation of if you have the XCF of the GAP still try it with that defore you final save...

Remimber that this is found from the "Image Window / Image / Mode / Indexed..." but youll need a fresh image that doesnt already have dithering.

I did the Indexing before saving my gif, but now my gif is a complete mess (can be viewed at same location above). After the indexing and save, if I do Filters/Animation/Playback, there are only 3 frames. Yet I created a 20 frame gif. The 3 frames look like it's my background, logo and text layers.

I really appreciate your help. Any ideas on this one?

As frustrating as it may sound I think it would be best to re~do the tutorial making sure to follow each step carefully. It took me alot of time to do my first animation, when I finally got it down I was so happy that all the time I put into it paid off!

As with any tutorial I find that personally I miss one or two steps on my first try because I get anxious and skip something un aware that I have done it :c:

I was unable to view the animation at the link, but I belive that there was some dithering in the first, try again and see what happens.

I look forword to seeing your finished work :l:

Okay, I'll redo the tutorial. I hear you on being anxious and skipping steps. I'm excited about this tool, so I very well could've skipped something. I'll post when I'm done.

Re-did the tutorial and you were correct. I skipped the step of doing Frames to Image. I did the dithering of none and tada, it worked! Thank you very much!!! I loaded my gif to http://www.lando-lin...images/logo.gif.

One more question, if I may: what other techniques to shrink the size. It's 209k. I did the optimize for gif. I changed the resolution to 65pixels. It's a big image (690x105), so maybe a gif of this size can't get under 100k??? Any other techniques to try??

Thanks again Sean-Michael.

One thing you can do to reduce the size is reduce the number of colors in the pallet... but as you do this keep a copy of the original tucked away because there will come a point where the image quality suffers from the reduction of colors used and youll have to find for yourself the Happy Medium Posted Image to do this try the following...

[*] Tuck a copy away some where.

[*] Open your .gif.

[*] Turn the Gif back to a RGB image {From image window / Image / Mode / RGB}

[*] Turn the Image into a Indexed image {From image window / Image / Mode / Indexed...}
But this time enter a smaller number for the value "Maximum number of colors", Id try
half of the original # or like 200 and then preview the animation, if its ok to the eyes then
"save as test" and view the properties to see if the size has reduced enough, if not delete
that test and start over till you get the colors reduced to the point you can except...

That is the Happy meduim I was referring to... G~Luck! :l:

Thanks for the suggestion to reduce the # of colors. That helped a bit. I got it down to 158k. Still larger than I want, but it should be acceptable.

Keep up the good work and I appreciate you sticking with me.

Hi, ZeroClub, welcome to Gimptalk!

To get to that step, you go to the Video menu, then Duplicate Frames. If you don't see the Video menu across the top of GIMP, you don't have GAP installed. You'll need to go to the Quick Download GIMP link in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and download/install it separately.

Download it from the Quick Download GIMP link, unzip, and then double-click on the executable file to install.
