Well it seem's that transparency is playing tricks on you.
I hope you saved your huge xcf file containig all frames (file on which you applied "Optimize (For GIF)" filter ... step 19 in tutorial ) because your gif file is really messed up and cannot be corrected.
All you have to do is replace transparency in each of yours frames with some color (white). An easy way to do this: right click on a layer in layer dialog, "Remove Alpha Channel". Then continue with step 20.
Or... if you really want your background transparent, you can try this: in the step 22 as you save your gif file, set "save as gif" options as on the image below...

Missing pictures, so sad. Perhaps tutorial writers should offer PDFs of the tutorials as well, so when time passes by, at least there will be a workable medium of the tutorial.

Getting Started.

Reads well but there are no pictures as examples. Is that intentional?

Likeitis,

Sean-Michael posted this tutorial in May of 2005, 6 years and 3 months ago. None of the images that were used in this tutorial remain at the server that he used at the time. My best guess is that was space allocated to him by his ISP and likely he switched to another ISP, resulting in those images being removed by the original ISP. So, no, the lack of images is not intended.

The older the tutorial here on gimptalk, the greater the chance that some or all of the images may be missing unfortunately. In the case of this tutorial, it is very unfortunate, since this was an excellent tutorial by Sean-Michael for helping new users to get help with learning to use GAP.
