it's the fading box in the tool window that first pops up near your different brushes in between your paint bucket and your pencil. you drag your line from one side of the selected area you want colored to the other side in the direction you want colored.. hope this helped.. no worries I had to search for it too.

That is a very common problem I bet! On the top toolbar of the image (not the toolbox toolbar) select "Dialogs" > "Layers" and a little window should pop-up with all of the layers and their names. Above the frame that has all of the layers in it, there is a drop-down box (usually set at normal) with many choices. "Difference" is among them. I hope this helps to clear up some confusion.
