Well, it's been well over a year since I created/posted the tutorial so I don't recall. However, in this case, I think everything should work just fine. I'm guessing you have a question other than the one you've just posted, so if you can explain what you're needing help on, I'll do my best.

Well I guess that I am at this point just wondering if it has to be a square that you use to make the lightening? If so that could explain why mine looks funky...

I guess at this point it really isn't a big deal if I can't get it to work out but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be nice if it did...

I typically like your tutorials and just thouight that this one looked interesting so I would give it a shot... but oh well it is no big deal.

No, the lightning should work on any size layer. I just ran a quick test and my lightning looked fine. Is the blend mode of your gradient tool something other than "normal?" I know we experimented with that some and maybe you didn't set it back. Double-click the gradient tool button to open the options and see if that's what's causing you grief. Just a thought.

As far as the point I was trying to make in my previous post...I certainly don't mind helping you, but your request just died in the middle. It's like we're having a face to face conversation and you got up and walked out of the room. No goodbye, no "I'm done", nothing. I can't process your request if you've given me nothing to work with....that's all....

Ya sorry about that. I figured out what the problem was, I had the dithering option selected while on the gradient tool. I didn't see any area that told us to unselect all options for the tool so I left it the way it was (with normal style setting).

Here is what it looks like now:

As you can see, it turned out a TON better than my first attempt :)

Thanks for the help

(I know this topic is old, sorry for bumping it)

I like the effect that this makes, but I can only get it on a black image, how do I get it on something else, without the black background(sorry, just starting to learn GIMP)

After you colorize the layer, go to Colors -> Color to Alpha for GIMP 2.3 or Layers -> Transparency -> Color to Alpha for GIMP 2.2. Select black, and all black pixels will be replaced with transparency.

Fun and easy tutorial to follow. thanks again Art. I'm usually lazy and use a lightning brush, but I might in the future try to make my own :)

Do you mean GIMP?

As far as showing the images, just below the area where you type in your post, is a box called Upload Image....try using that. Otherwise, try hosting the image on imageshack or photobucket and then put the image link in between the [*img*]image link [*/img*] tags (remove the asterisks before you do. I only did that so the tags would show up and wouldn't try to link to an image.

Create several different layers of lightning and save as a gif. If you want to place the lightning layers over another image (like a signature), set the layer mode of the lightning layers to "Lighten"
