I created the lightning on a separate layer and I believe I set that layer to lighten(?) Can't quite remember and I can't find the xcf file to verify. I also cropped the ends of the lightning bolt to fit and smudged them just a tad where they touched the skin to make the edges look a little smoother.

Is there any way to:
1. Shape it the way you want to?
and
2. Take the black out of it and paste it into a picture? Or some other way, possibly the way you did it in the picture with your baby?

Not sure about the other one but for that you can use IWARP(filters>distorts>Iwarp) on the clouds layer..

Okay I tried this, loved the outcomes that other people got but I think I am missing something. When I make the lightning it comes out pixelized, as follows:

Is there any way that I can stop this from happening? Or have I missed a step in there somewhere?

hmmm, not sure. Do you have any other layers above it? Looks like one of your layers is set to the Dissolve blend mode. But I really don't know.
