Yamiwar’s Sprite Signature Tutorial

First of all, I’d like to thank Yamiwar for making the original tutorial found here and for letting me convert his tutorial into Gimp. Some parts are different here and there, but if it weren’t for him, none of this would be possible.

You’ll be making this

If you want to see the xcf, or rip this signature and claim it as your own, go here

Some Sprite Sites:
Panelmonkey
Pokemonelite
Videogamesprites

ONTO THE TUTORIAL

1) Open up you canvas. It can be any size you want, for mine, it’s 360x150. Pick a dark colour that will compliment your sprite, and do a linear gradient using that colour and black.

Posted Image

2) Make a new layer and paste your sprite somewhere. Duplicate that layer 4 times. And hide the duplicated layers by clicking the eye in the Layers Dialogue. In the bottom most layer the sprite is in, smudge it around with a small brush, then go Filters>Noise>Pick. Set the randomization and repeat at 100.

Posted Image

3) Unhide the sprite layer above that and go Filters>Distorts>Ripple. Just click ok when something pops up. Set that layer to dodge at about 50%. Unhide the next sprite layer repeat the ripple filter but this time, change the orientation to Vertical. Set the layer to dodge at about 25%.

Posted Image

4) Unhide your fourth sprite layer. Copy and paste your sprite a couple of times in that layer. Go Filters>Distorts>Iwarp.
To actually use the Iwarp filter, you should see the current layer you have on the top left corner. Click and drag in that little screen. Play around with the Deform Modes at the right
Posted Image
Once you’re done, move the Iwarped sprites to around where your sprite is. Erase things you don’t want with a soft brush

Posted Image
Set it to Screen at 40%
Posted Image

5) Unhide your last sprite layer. Set it to Normal at 80%. (I moved it down a bit, but that’s just me)

Posted Image

6) Make a new layer and move it just above the background layer. Brush around using your sparks brush. Hide that layer. Make a new layer, go Edit>Copy Visible, and paste it. Go Filters>Map>Displace. Once something pops up, pick the sparks brush layer for both the X and Y displacement and pick smear. Erase things you don’t like, and set that layer to Screen at about 87%

Posted Image

7) Make a new layer and go Edit>Copy Visible and paste it again. Redo the Displace filter using the same settings. Set it to Screen at about 50%.

8) Decide if you think your signature is too bright or too dark. Make a new layer and go Edit>Copy Visible and paste. Go Layers>Colours>Brightness-Contrast. Adjust the Brightness until satisfied. Set it to Darken Only at about 50%

Posted Image

9) Make a new layer and paste your sprite there. Set it to Multiply at about 30%. Make a new layer and Copy Visible and paste(You should know how by now). Pick a colour from your sprite and do a Gradient Map (Filters>Colours>Map>Gradient Map) using that colour and black. Set it to Hue at about 50%. Make a new layer, Copy Visible and paste again. Set your colours to black and white and do another Gradient Map. Set it to Colour at 50%

Posted Image

10) Make a new layer. Set your foreground colour to white and brush where you want some lighting to be. Duplicate that layer. Make a new layer and brush around where you want more effects. Set them all to overlay at about 60%

Posted Image

11) Make a new layer. Using your Ellipse Select tool make a circle and fill it with a light colour from your sprite. Make the circle cover where your sprite is. Go Filters>Blur>Motion Blur. Set the angle to fit the flow of the signature. Set the length to around 200. Erase things you don’t like using a soft brush. Set it to Screen at about 30%

Posted Image

12) Make a new layer and paste your sprite. Set it to Lighten only at 80%

Posted Image

13) Make a new layer. Copy Visible and paste it. Go Filters>Artistic>Gimpressionist. Pick Canvas then click Apply. Before you click ok, click Brush, you should see a menu of the different brushes Gimpressionist could use (The default for the Canvas Gimpressionist is Weave). Pick the brush called Wavy.
Posted Image
Now click ok. Set it to Lighten Only at 20%

Posted Image

14) Make a new layer, Copy visible and paste again(It’s REALLY getting old isn’t it?) and motion blur it using the same settings you used last time. Set it to Normal at 40%. Make a new layer, copy visible and paste yet again. Go Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Set both the horizontal and vertical to 3. Set it to lighten only at 100%.

15) See those dots in the top left? We’re going to destroy them >=) Get a colour from your background, somewhere near those dots. Make a new layer, and brush with a soft brush over those dots.

Posted Image

16) Make a new layer, copy visible, paste. Add a Gradient Map using a light colour from your sprite and black. Set it to Soft Light at about 50%.

Posted Image

17) Make a new layer and brush using a small brush where you think it’s too bright. Set it to Soft Light at about 40%.

Posted Image

18) Make a new layer and paste your sprite. Set it to Multiply about 50%

Posted Image

19) Make a new layer. Copy Visible, paste. Go Filters>Distorts>Iwarp. Go crazy distorting your signature. Use the different Deform Modes like Swirl, Grow, Shrink, etc.

Posted Image
Set it to Lighten Only, at 20%
Posted Image

20) Make a new layer. Paste in your sprite. Move it to a different place than before though. Duplicate that layer, then move the sprite around. Repeat until you have 4 of those out of place sprites

Posted Image
21)On all of those four layers, use the Iwarp filter to add some ‘pizzazz’ into your signature. Set them all either as Soft Light or Overlay, at different opacities.

Posted Image
1st Set at Soft Light at 100%

Posted Image
2nd Set at Soft Light at 40%

Posted Image
3rd Set at Overlay at 100%

Posted Image
4th Set at Overlay at 49%

22)Okay, nearly done. Make a new layer, Copy visible, paste it. Add a Gradient Map. For the colours, well, it’s up to you. For mine, I used orange and purple. Set it to Hue at 20%

Posted Image

23) Repeat the previous step, but this time, use a black and white Gradient Map. Set it to Colour at about 30%.

Posted Image

24)Make a new layer. Copy visible and paste. Go Filters>Map>Displace. Use the same settings you used way back then when we started on this. Set it to Grain Merge at about 30%

Posted Image

25)Make a new Layer. Copy visible and paste. Go Filters>Enhance>Sharpen. It’ll be up to you how sharp you want it. Once you’re satisfied, set it to Lighten Only at 40%

26)This is it, the FINAL STEP ^_^; Copy Visible and paste on a new layer. Use the Iwarp Filter again, but this time only around the sprite. Set it to Lighten Only at 80%. Duplicate it. Add a border, some text if you want and you, my friend, are done!

well here's my result, I think it's a bit messed up, since My GIMPM version is 2.2, and when Anything is set to lighten, I get the Green Lines Glitch >.>
A bit blurry for the render I must say:
