I was playing with gimp during spare time and created few good looking 3D bowls, so, I thought why not to write a tutorial on it so that all level users can utilize gimp for creating 3D bowls for their projects.
Prerequisites
You must be familier with creating new image, adding new layers, filling solid color, gradients, and patterns in layers/selections. If you do not know how to perform above mentioned operations then Click here to read beginners tutorial first.

Let us get started with practical.
[*] Start new empty image, which usually comes with a white background layer (if no options changed in dialog appeared after clicking File > New). New file must be equal in height and width e.g. 300x300, 600x600, etc. In this tutorial, I will be working with width : 300 and height : 300 too.
[*] Insert a new layer
[*] Select newly created layer
[*] Select exactly half region (vertically) of the newly inserted layer, on right side of iamge area, as show below:

[*] Fill the selection using some marble kind of pattern, or any other you like, so that the image window looks like this:

[*] Remove selection using menus Select > None.
[*] Within the same image window, go through menus Filters > Map > Map Object.
A new window will appear, in this window we need to work only with two tabs. In Options tab you see a drop-down list of object types captioned Map to, select Sphere from this list and check the Transparent background, as show below:

[*] Now click the Orientation tab, where you see 3 sliderbars under a label Rotation. Set values as shown below:

[*] Finally click button OK and your damn 3D bowl is ready :w:
TIP
A bowl can also be created using solid or gradient filled area, try it.
That's all.
BTW : show me results if you succeed creating one.
regards
