I have Windows XP with service pack 2 and Gimp 2.2.10. When I try to create a new image, Gimp crashes. Specifically, I start up Gimp, and go to "File", then "New...", and click "OK", it crashes. I am using no template, and I have the width set to 420 pixels and the height to 300. I have the X resolution and the Y resolution at 72 pixels/inch, and the colorspace set to RGB color. I set the "fill with background" setting. It seems to crash regardless of what combination of settings I pick. After I click "OK", I see the new picture, but immediately, I see a window that says "gimp-2.2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. For more information about the error, click here." When I view the information, it gives an error signature that says "AppName: gimp-2.2.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: libglib-2.0-0.dll
ModVer: 2.6.6.0 Offset: 0004117d". It also gave me a long list of technical information that I was unable to copy and paste, and it would take me several hours to type into this message. I was practically unable to recover the technical info. Why is it crashing? What can I do about it?

I uninstalled and reinstalled GIMP, and it's still giving me the same problem.

Here's a comment message I tried to post to http://blog.yumdap.net/archives/43-GIMP ... eased.html when I experienced the same crash above while trying to use GIMPShop. It seemed to be a dll versioning problem. My suggestion is to uninstall GIMP, reboot, and then confirm that the C:\Program Files\GIMP folder is gone, and if not, delete it yourself.

----comment message below----
If your install of GIMPShop 2.2.8 on Windows XP crashes in
libglib-2.0-0.dll try these steps:

1.) install GIMPShop in its own folder, say 'C:\Program Files\GIMPshop' 2.)
go to C:\Program Files\GIMPshop\bin\ and remove these files:
libglib-2.0-0.dll libgmodule-2.0-0.dll libgobject-2.0-0.dll
libgthread-2.0-0.dll 3.) install GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment (version
2.8.18, for Windows 2000 and newer)

This should force GIMPShop to use the GTK 2.8 libraries. It seems there may
be a library versioning conflict between the included GIMPShop GTK
libraries (v2.6) and the newer GTK (v2.8) libraries that are already on a
system. (Say from having a full blown GIMP v2.2.12 install or DIA or other
GPL program that uses GTK.)

Note: if uninstall/reinstall GIMPshop v2.2.8, you may also need to
reinstall GIMP. It seems the two apps are not cleanly separated and will
walk over each other if you remove one or the other.

I had this problem for a while, I fixed it by increasing the tile cache 400mb, instead of the default (64 iirc - its been a while)

this is what mine looks like, and it hasn't crashed since I made these changes. Keepin mind I have 1GB Ram, so you would need to adjust for you system.

I'm having a similar issue with a client.

I have tried un-installing, removing all of the data in the Application Data folders etc, re-installing.

HERE is where it gets strange.

If the users:
1. Launches a file associated with GIMP, GIMP then crashes
2. Launches GIMP, then tries to create a new file, GIMP then crashes.
3. Launches GIMP, then opens a file, GIMP works, and is then able to create a new file

Any ideas?

1 and 3 make me think to a problem with gimp remote that often don't work very well on windows
but 2 ...hum ...it's doesn't fit so well...i mean you launch gimp , you try to create a a file and it crash?

About solutions
1 be sure to break any file association with gimp most sure way to do it is install irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com) i:s one of the best viewer and converter (nothing to do with the poor windows fax and image viewer ...it's really precious to organize browse and convert in other format and even for quick corretions
usually it make more sense associate all graphic files to a good viewer then to a editor...so you can browse and convert almost any kind of file or even see your image as a slideshow( on the fly ..and could be saved)

(NOTE in theory to change file association you just need to right click on a file and then chose a program to associate...however this in win usually never work when files were associated with gimp,

2 be sure to get the right to see HIDDEN AND SYSTEM FILES (start\search\ advanced search\show hidden and system files) then unistall gimp and gtk...after unistall manually delete anything left (gtk folder is usually in C: Program Files\commun Files \Gtk)
3) Then reinstalling AVOID any file associations (gimp don't need file association to open files...and most of times associate a graphic editor to something as jpg,gif or png is much more a nuisance then a advantage)

I'm having the same problems, and I've -completely- wiped gimp (no folder left, etc etc), and reinstalled... The exact same thing with having to open a file from within gimp -then- I can create a new one is happening to me...

Has it been resolved anyone?

Right, it is a GTK version conflict. Thanks to the pointers from hkazemi above, I fixed it using these steps:

1. Install the latest GTK from http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html (in my case it was GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment (version 2.10.6, for Windows 2000 and newer))

2. Rename 3 files in C:\Program Files\GIMPshop\bin\libglib-2.0-0.dll libgmodule-2.0-0.dll libgobject-2.0-0.dll to something else.

3. Copy the newer versions of the above 3 filenames from "%commonprogramfiles%\GTK\2.0\bin" to "C:\Program Files\GIMPshop\bin"

Now run GIMPshop, create a new image, and you should be fine. (no crashes)

http://xs318.xs.to/xs318/07325/errormessage.png

I had the problem where gimpshop would crash everytime I tried to stroke a selection. The ModName: libglib-2.0-0.dll apparently causes the problem. I tried following hkazemi's steps, but now I get that ^ error message, everytime I try to open gimpshop, so it won't open at all

Can anyone please help? :s:

Gimpshop is different from Gimp ...maybe you can try to ask to its developer side http://www.plasticbugs.com

Maybe if you click that "debug" button visible in the screenshoot ( where is the 2.4exe messages, that on bottom) that may give some useful info, just copy and paste the debug output

Hem not sure i can decipher it but some chance to find here somebody else able to do

couldn't get around the admin permission with the real one, but gimpshop installed without problems. i'm new to gimp, and this works great for my needs (following tutorials). the only thing that crashes now, is when i try to make the preview window too big in effects. but only the effect crashes, not the whole program. so i just start it again, no problem. ps, speaking of old stuff, i used pixbuilder studio for the longest, and it taught me what i need to know for gimp.

Try GIMP portable. http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_p ... p_portable

It's the current version and you don't need to install anything. It just extracts the folder to where ever you want. Don't think it will give you admin permission problems?
