This tutorial is from a subsection of my background tutorial on another message board, here:

http://forums.nintendo.com/nintendo/board/message?board.id=techsupport&message.id=205758#M205758
Anyways here is how it is done:

Background # 2: Crystals

Step 1:Set-up&Filters

To make a crystal type background start a new template, now go to filters->Artistic->Cubism and hit OK when it pops up. (For larger crystals fool around with the cubism effects)

The screen should be filled with small grayish cubes as shown below if done correctly.

Next go to Filters->Edge Detect and hit OK when it pops up.

Step 2:Coloring and creating crystals

It should now resemble the below image, all grey and gem like.

Image

Now to add some color: Go to filters->Color->Filter Pack-> Click on Hue-> select and adjust your color.

Now your done, examples are below.

Feel free to show off your work with my tutorial. :)

Thanks Koopa! This was actually posted before by another user here: http://www.gimptalk.com/topic.php?a=v&t=363&f=3

But you'll be happy to know, they referenced your tutorial!

That's good to hear. Someone else on here stole one of my other tutorials without crediting me. As long as credit is given, and its not a direct copy + paste, I'm just fine with that.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'm glad that you like it. :)

Sure I don't mind. Just if someone asks where you got the design from, you can refer to this tutorial or my screen name.

Yeah, same to you too.

I made an account for this site a while ago, I just haven't bothered to post until just recently.

This could be a cool effect to use the displace filter with :D.

You totally read my mind. Nice tut Koops, could be useful if I ever decide to continue the Kirby project. :w:

@ DJ:

Hmmm...Never thought of that. Good idea.

I'm not that experienced with using the displacement filter, but I'd be interested in a result.

@ Afrochicken14:

Thanks for the compliment/comment.

Ohhhhhh wow.... This just gave me an idea.... It looks a lot like a big pit of crystal formations seen at a bird's-eye view. Wouldn't it be awesome if someone made a 3d-looking crystal garden (from a more level perspective) based off this thing?

Also, here's an example of that "Displace" tool at work.

Image Original image (I chose something uniform to make the demonstration clearer)

Image Displace map made with this tutorial

Image Displacement of 5 on both axes; "On Edges" set to "Smear".

@ Pig_catapult:

I've used the filter before I just don't use it often. Thanks for the demonstration, though. :)

I just wanted to show what kind of thing would happen if someone used the displace tool with this as the map like someone suggested. You know, to get people's creative juices flowing. ^_^

I remember this tutorial. I think I tried it before I registered here. Shame I haven't got the file anymore.

One thing I found out is that this makes for some excellent brushes.

Great for smudging too I discovered. And to think they were so easy to make.
