I am very new, but I thought this might help a few people.

First, make sure you have GIMP 2 and GTK+Runtime installed on your computer.

1.Now, go to the GIMP column with all the buttons and go to file. Now choose the new button and make a signature size you desire.(My usual is 400x150)

Image

2.Now go to Filters. scroll down until you come to Render. Now choose either; Cloud, Nature, or Pattern. You can now fool around with the options, but I try to use Plasma in a lot of my signatures.

3.Now you can switch the colors around by going to Tools, and then going to Colorize. You should have a screen something like this.

You can also fool around with the colors here, but signatures look very nice when they blend into their renders.

Image

4.Now here comes the fun part. You can now add many extra add-ons to your sig. Here are a few thing you could do to it, by going to Filters, and choosing either Blur, Color, Noise, Edge-Detect, Enhance, Generic, Glass effects, Light effects, Distorts, Artistic, and finally, Map. Here is an example of how I changed a background into this.

Hope you enjoy it, and use it sometime in the future.

different than those ''brush with this'' and ''brush with that'' tutorials, that makes it good, you could add something more tho..

It's my first tut and I thought it might help some new GIMP users (such as myself :l:) to make a decent background.

I agree, we can never forget about noobies as we were all one once!

Blinkz, not to be hard on ya, but you always appear to have a critical tone about everyone's efforts. Constructive criticism is good and always comes with territory when you post in a public forum. But I get the impression that many posts are below you or just a waste of your time. Do you not want people to post or would you rather everyone run their posts by you for approval before presenting? *scratches head* Sometimes not posting anything is better than continual criticism.

Sorry to take over your thread, Fallon.

Just my $.02

Fallen I think it is a great tutorial and it is easy to follow. It creates a basic background that any one can start w/. Every one has to start some where.

Thank you very much for sharing this with us. I think I will create some thing with it just for fun. Some times back to basics is good and can produce great things

well.. i just would have tried to help, i cant do much off who i am, i still try to be as nice as possible.. if we come to the point that is this a good tut, yes.. better than most sig tuts here, this teahces you something they dont.. the world is full of tutorials that says download this from there and use it like this and there you have a sig. this is something different

good enough :l:?

I made a nice, simple BG for my desktop using this! Check it out: Image

Notice the 3-D-ish text (not just the shadow, look at it long enough and it'll look 3-D...) I'll make a tutorial for it if there isn't already one if you guys would like, and once I figure out how to make it more obviously 3-D.

Oh, I also used the light effects part of the tut to make my sig, thanks!
