ok.. you want to make those ''smudgy'' stuffs, heres a way off doing tubes with the tool.

Imagepart one
make a new image, i prefer pretty big like 1152x864 (size off most wallpapers)

make a new layer, name it ''red'' and make a cloud (filters->render-> umm ye.. the ''cloud''-one, finnish gimp ><) and press the ''turbulence'' and the other box so it looks like this:
Image
now go to layer->color->invert colors and it looks like this:
Image
now comes the part that will make your backgrounds look different.
you must add it some contrast, layer->color->light&contr. and put settings to pretty much like me -100 light, 100 contr. (they should be pretty close to eachother.
Image
now you have to colorize it, layer->color->colorize, i made it a bit lighter and red,
Image
now, duplicate the layer and invert its colors, layer->color->invert
Image
now.. you have 3 layers, background (still empty) the red and the light blue layers, so now you have to copy the red layer and place the layers so that the blue one is under 1 of the red ones.
now put the lightning mode off the red one to difference
and merge them
Image

Imagepart 2, tubes

take the smudge tool, and select the 19x19 circle brush (not fuzzy) and start smudging on the blue-red layer, keeping the mouse button down all the time, try to go first vertically and horizonally then just go crazy with it:
Image
ok.. now you have the lines, but if you still think it needs something, inevert the tubed layer and copy the red layer (first colored image here) and place it on top off the tubes, invert it and put the lightning mode to multiply
Image
you can copy the ''multiplyed'' layer and turn it around or flip it horizonally, whatever you want to get a more interesting look
Image.

this style works well with different colors, image sizes, maybe with brushings, etc etc.
happy tubing :l:
