Everything was simple to follow right up to the point where the background is suppose to disappear. I try ctrl-k and delete but both ways don't get rid of the white background. Is there something that I've done to prevent the background from being deleted because the selection tools work perfect just can't get that background to go away.

Any help would be beauty

Right click your image Layer and select Add Alpha Channel.

If the layer name is bold, it means no alpha (transparency) channel. After you do the above, the name will no longer be bold.
