well, i made that meteor picture a while ago and got a request off a tut, didnt get it which part i should make so heres the basics of a ''spacy'' look

Image PART ONE, meteor/fireish planet

image size 400*400 or bigger (same height and lenght)
make a new layer and fill with black, mess around with the lasso tool about 30-60 times through the image and cut that out, you get something like this
Image
now add a 1 pixel white outline to the black layer (select, grow 1 px, make a new layer under black one, fill with white)
merge the 2 layers and blur with 1
Image
now make it to a ball form, play with the rotation options a bit (not sure where this is, in filters anyway, maybe some1 could help me out)
Image

now you have to do the 1 pixel white outline again to the ball and merge them together, blur, colorize and give it a contrast (yellow)
give it a pixel stretch and copy layer and colorize to red and change lightning mode to anything you want.
merge all meteor layers
selest area of them, render a plasma 5.0+ and colorize to red
add some contrast and set blending mode to umm.. ''screen'' or anyways the 5th from up
you get about something like this
Image
(changed background to black, try to get white out off the red plasma)
Image
PART TWO: the ''lines''
add a new layer ''black'' and fill with black (changed background to white to help you out, keep it black or trans if you want to)
take the circle eclipse whatever tool and select a big circle and cut it out of the image:
Image
use the script fu called something like ''glowing hot'' (straight translation) or something like that
remove the black ''background'' layer you get with the script, and alpha selection on the ''black'' layer and then select the layer with the red yellow glow and press ctrl k or x or whatever it is to cut that part out.
blur with 3. heres what you get:
Image

finally add some stars or whatever you like

you can check out my result in art galleries a topic named ''a meteor thing'' or close to that :a: which went much better than result pic of me (http://www.gimptalk.com/topic.php?a=v&t=1328&f=3)
some tips:

you can add a lighning effect on the yellow meteor layer in the middle of the ball (lightning effects lightning or something)

you can make more than 1 red-yellow line and use some motion blurs/pixel stretches on them

add some stars and white novas to the background

you can give the black sharp things (first pic) a plasma render that you desaturate to get more sharp and deeper colors on the meteor

I don't understand what you mean by the lasso tool, could you clarify?

The "lasso tool" is also called "Free Select" and is available from the "Tools->Selection Tools->Free Select" command. The default quick-key assignment is the "F" key.

We never found out how to make it into 'ball form'.

Never mind, I found it out in the globe tutorial. It's "Filters>Map>Map Object" for those of you who couldn't figure it out from the original post.

The result is great, but I'm not sure I understand this part of the tut.

now you have to do the 1 pixel white outline again to the ball and merge them together, blur, colorize and give it a contrast (yellow)
give it a pixel stretch and copy layer and colorize to red and change lightning mode to anything you want.
merge all meteor layers
selest area of them, render a plasma 5.0+ and colorize to red
add some contrast and set blending mode to umm.. ''screen'' or anyways the 5th from up

Could you clarify? What's a pixel stretch? What do you mean by the first line of instructions, do a 1 pixel white outline, blur the ball, and then colorize to yellow and give it a bit of a contrast? Like this?

You guys say great tut, but is it really? A valiant effort, to be sure, but many things were unclear. Have either of you tried to use it? It's a bit hard. Yes, the result is incredible and I'm very glad you chose to share the method with us, Blinkz, but it's almost useless unless you make your meaning clear. I'm not trying to be harsh, but the method could definitely be more clear.

im sorry if this is a bit late to bring this topic back up, but considering this tut is still being used i believe it is necessary to point out that there DOES need to be more clarification in this tutorial and i agree with what Fiver said below

if you could clarify more that would be great, but if you can't could you plz clarify more in future tuts.

Okay that was just childish and not needed.

Excellent Tutorial by the way, it offers a nice seed for though on other space compositions.

You can also instead of using Map Object use the glass effects and apply lens to get a globe effect as well.
Here is a spacy image I created today.

I like the outcome of this but I'm having trouble figuring out what the tutorial writer meant....anyone wanna help me translate this?
Especially since it's on the official tutorial page. It needs to be clarified for noobs and newbs(people who are familiar with GIMP but aren't , if you know what I mean.... me, for example. :w: )

I've gotten to the point where it says:
Quote:
now you have to do the 1 pixel white outline again to the ball and merge them together, blur, colorize and give it a contrast (yellow)
give it a pixel stretch and copy layer and colorize to red and change lightning mode to anything you want.
merge all meteor layers

I have the "translation" up that far and that's as far as I've been able to figure it out on my own for myself. Anyone willing to help me out? *puppy dog eyes* Please please...
