Tech Star

-----

This is another converted photoshop tutorial. Give Credit Where Credit Is DUE!!! The original ps tutorial is at Tech Star Avatar. NOTE: All images are scaled by 50%.

[*]1. New Image, Any Size. Create and Work off a new transparent layer.

[*]2. Filters->Light Effects->GFlare... On the "Selector" tab pick a preset. I am going to use GFlare_101. On the "Settings" tab CENTER your image (width/2 height/2). Use the "Hue Rotation" slider to pick a color. Set the "Vector Length" slider to 1.

Image

[*]3. Duplicate your GFlare Layer and Make the original invisible. NOTE: When following a tutorial it is always good to make a duplicate layer of a successfully completed step, undo fails at times, to prevent lost work. Now, Filters->Distorts->Curve Bend... Make a sort of 'W' or sombrero with BOTH THE LOWER AND UPPER. Keep the lower below the upper.

Image

[*]4. Fix the any size (boundary) problems with Image->Fit Canvas to Layers ... You may have to repeat this step later.

[*]5. Now Make 4 copies of that layer. Rotate them however you want. You can rotate each layer by 90 degree increments or use the Flip tool. But you should end up with something like this. Also, notice I made my background layer black and did a "Layer to Image Size on It", and you might have to repeat step 4.

Image

[*]Final, Play around with it add some effects. Change the style of your GFlare.

Use Dialogs->Layers and click on whatever layer you would like to use.

I'm getting very down hearted as every tut I try I end up not getting the same end result or I get part the way thru the tut and what happens to me is not as described in the tut.

This one for example, each time I create a duplicate copy and rotate it the rotation affects all layers! Even when I have only one selected and visibile turned off of all the others.

I am new to GIMP and understand the concepts but am yet to acheive succuss with the tuts :a:

Help anyone!

Do any of the layers have a little "chain link" icon visible in the layers dialog box? If so, that might be the problem. The chain link indicates that certain GIMP functions will be applied to all the layers that are "linked". If this isn't the case, would you mind posting a screenshot of your layer dialog window so we can all have a look?

Thanks, Art

EDIT: You may also be rotating using the "Image Transform" menu. If you are, try "Layer Transform" Should be one menu to the right.

What you do, is when photobucket or imageshack gives you the URL to the picture you want, copy it. Then in your text window here, put (bracket)IMG(bracket) and then the URL and then (bracket)/IMG(bracket). This can also be done by clicking the 'image' button and then pasting the URL between the brackets.
