Tech Splash Tutorial - Mattias R. aka Luktar

This is a tutorial written for http://www.gimptalk.com and for http://www.gimp.org splash screen contest 10th Anniversary, Version 2.2.10

Requirements:
This tutorial is tested on GIMP 2.2.8 Windows Edition running on a XP with SP1.

The final result will look like this.
Image

Ok. Lets get this started.

0. Create a New Transparent Image with these settings. width=300 height=290

1. Go to "Filters->Render->Clouds->Plasma", Choose a setting you like.
Convert it to Greyscale. "Layer->Colors->Desaturate"
Image

2. Apply a 20x20px Pixelize with "Filters->Blur->Pixelize".
Image

3. Next we will apply a Motion Blur, "Filters->Blur->Motion Blur". Set Blur Type to "Zoom" and Blur Parameters=15. [check]
Image

4. Now we will apply a Emboss, "Filters->Disorts->Emboss". Set Function to "Emboss", Azimuth=30, Elevation=45, Depth=15. [check]
Image

5. Time to find those edges, "Filters->Edge-Dectect->Edge". Set Algorithm to "Prewitt", Amount=9, Wrap. [check]
Image

6. Apply Motion Blur. "Filters->Blur->Motion Blur".Set Blur Type to "Zoom", Blur Parameters=20.
Image

7. Alter the Contrast. "Layer->Colors->Brightness and Contrast". Set Contrast=60 [check]
Image

8. Create a new Layer and set the mode to "Grain merge". Go to "Filters->Render->Clouds->Plasma", Choose a setting you like.
Convert it to Greyscale. "Layer->Colors->Desaturate"
Image

9. Create a new Layer and set the mode to "Overlay". Fill the Layer with HTML Color "#579aff".
Image

10. Create a new Transparent Layer. Select a area of 50px high and be sure to cover the whole image in the width. Fill it with HTML Color "#ffffff".
Move the filled area down to the bottom on the image. Set the Layer Opacity=35
Image

11. Download the "04b_21" font from http://www.dafont.com and install it.

12. Add the text "GIMP 2.2.10".
13. Select all text with "Layer->Transparency->Alpha to Selection".

14. Create a new Transparent Layer. Choose the Paintbrush tool and choose brush "Circle Fuzzy (03)(3x3)"

15. Mark the newly created Layer and go "Edit->Stroke Selection". Move the Layer under the Text Layer.
Image

16. Merge Down the Step 12 to your Step 14 Layer. "Layer->Merge Down".

17. Repeat Step 12-16 with the other Text Layers.

18. Rotate the GIMP 2.2.10 Layer -45 Degrees. "Layer->Transform->Arbitarary Rotation". And move it to appropriate location.
Image

19. Do the same with "HTTP://WWW.GIMPTALK.COM" Text but rotate -90 degees instead. Set Layer Opacity to 67.

20. Create a new Transparent Layer and select a area appropriate size matching your Text on the "GIMP 2.2.10" Text. Rotate -45 Degrees and Change Layer Opacity to 50. Sort Layer under the GIMP 2.2.10 Layer

21. Create a new Transparent Layer and select a area appropriate size matching your Text on the "To Err is human..." Layer. Add a Layermask to the Layer. "Layer->Mask->Add Layer Mask".
Image

22. Use the Gradient Tool black to White and use it on the Mask. Your Image should look something like this now.
Image

23. Import some Wilber:s in various sizes and align them appropriate.
Image

24. Create a new Transparent Layer. Select all "Select->All" then shrink the selection 1px "Select->Shrink".

25. Invert the selection. "Select->Invert" and fill the Layer with HTML Color "#000000".

Your Splash Image is now complete (Hopefully).

Happy GIMP:ing

Because you just typed in a name. Let me guess, you saved it as "Untitled" ? You need to format it. A few are:

.png: Best one IMO. Preserves transparency, and good quality.
.bmp: BAD. DO NOT USE. IT IS HUGE.
.jpg: As good as .png, but does not support transparency
.gif: Supports animation and transparency, but is bad quality.
.xcf: Special format, only the GIMP can open it. Use so you don't have to flatten your image-it lets you keep the image exactly as you left it. (except undos of course.)

All formats but .xcf compress the image to one layer (well, .gif animates it by layer) so .xcf is for works in progress or works you want to show how you did layer-by-layer.

Always end like [Name].png or [name].xcf just [name] won't save, you'll get that error.

Welcome. Remember, you can't upload .xcf's to show them to people...
