I've had Gimp 2.2 for a while now, and I've recently downloaded 2.4.5. I have encountered one problem with the new version, and that is with moving my selections. In the old Gimp, I would select whatever I wanted to move, and then use the move tool to click, and drag it to wherever I want it to go. In the "new Gimp", whether or not I select, the move tool will only move the whole layer. This can sometimes cause problems when I use the rest of the screen on that layer, as it won't let me go past the space the layer occupied. For a visual reference of what this sort of thing looks like check here: http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd12 ... unk/SS.png. I'd like to know what's causing this, or how I can move just the selection. I'm currently working around it by copying the part I want to be moved, pasting it where I want it to be moved, and deleting it from where it used to be. I can also merge it down onto a new clean layer to keep the image, but restore the layer, but this is sometimes slow for my impatient self. :P If there's another way, please let me know. Thanks! ^^

This happened to me.

Basically what I do is every-time I put in a new picture or something I go to Layers (Ctrl + L) and right click the box and click new layer. Anytime you want to select it go back to layers and click on what you want to edit.

If there is any better way people can help me 2!

Hello. When you click the move tool from the toolbox, see below the toolbox in the tool options. The default would be move layer (represented as a small icon). To the right of that is move selection (another small icon). Click that icon and after that you can move selections. I learnt this only today by myself on GIMP 2.4.5.

Hope this helps.

Hold Ctrl+Alt directly after making the selection, and you will then be able to move the selection around as in the old versions of GIMP.
Check out our FAQ/Glossary thread for more info.
