First up make a new image, I will use size 400x100. Go to Filters>Render>Clouds>Plasma. Check the box that says "randomize" and click okay. Then go to Layer>Colors>Desaturate



Next up go to Filters>Blur>Pixelize. Set the settings to 20x20.



Duplicate that layer and do Filters>Edge-Detect>Neon with these settings.



Set that layer to overlay and duplicate it and you should get this:



As you notice there are really dark spots. Make a new transparent layer and brush over these with a white soft brush.

Set that layer to soft light. Repeat as many times as need be.


You need to be careful on this part. Brush in a soft black brush with low opacity on one of the edge-detected layers. Only do this on the REALLY bright areas that are mostly white. Make sure to only do this on one layer, if you do it on both it will leave that area looking flat.



Now for the coloring. Fill a new layer with a solid color. Set to overlay at 70% opacity.



This part is important. Go to Edit> Copy visable. Paste this as a new layer. Go to Filters>Glass Effects> Glass tile and put all the settings to the max.

Set this to overlay at 70% opacity.



Add any finishing touches and you're done!

If you want an extra touch you can sharpen the edge detected layers.

That looks great. THe glass effect really makes it.

Here's my version. I did a couple of things different, mostly because trying to get rid of those dark spots was a pain and I hate brushing. I fiddled around with some different layer modes and curves and levels to create a mask that sort of evened out the contrast.





A bit confusing. If it is important, then wouldn't it logically follow that it is necessary?

I also didn't do the black brushing. Seemed unclear. First you go to all the trouble of getting rid of the black areas...then go back in and brush with black???

I also used a second "copy visible" layer set to screen and used the laplace edge detect filter on it's lowest setting to kind of give the edges a little kiss of highlight.

I know how it goes. Dunno how many times I have written a tute, thought everything was fine, posted it...then gone back in and seen something that needed fixing.

By the way...I had never used that "Copy visible" thing before. Thanks for pointing it out.

This was the best I could do:

I dunnu, kelxz, I kinda like that one, looks sorta 3D....hmmm wonder what it would look like if you added some sort of "electric circuit" pattern to it?

I doubt this will work as a background for a sig, but I think it would look neat if you somehow made it PART of a background. Maybe merging all layers, placing it upon another background, lowering the opacity and erasing parts of it. Stuff like that.

Yeah I knew that. The last part anyway :l:. Lol kidding, yeah I was planning to do that except instead of erasing parts using layer masks. I <3 layer masks. The only matching renders I have for that are the metroid prime 3 ones though so I haven't tried to use it yet.

Oh and I think yours is really cool Kelx. What you get really depends on the plasma that you start with so it differs. I reccomend trying things other than plasma.

Heres what I came up with =p



What I did was Copy/Paste it onto a sig I'd already done and set it to overlay and erase the parts I didnt need and duplicated the layer and lowered the opacity. Then I added scan-lines.

Looks cool :w:

If I were you I'd remove the scanlines and alter the border a bit though.
