In this tutorial, I'll show you how to create this:

Image

I've provided a link to my original picture in case you'd like to use it.

Image

[*]Open up your desired image and resize it as needed.
[*]Duplicate the layer
[*]On the duplicate layer, add a Gaussian Blur of 7 or 8 pixels (go to Filters | Blur | Gaussian Blur). You can experiment with different blur settings, but this is what I used.

Your duplicate layer should look like this:

Image

[*]Now, go to Layer | Colors | Levels and adjust the settings of the duplicate layer like so:

Image

[*]The last step is to adjust the blend mode of your duplicate layer. I used "Hard Light", but you experiment and see if you can come up with something you like.

Image

You're done! Here's the final image:

Image

Now wasn't that easy?! Very beautiful. Now add a border, some text and you've got yourself a great sig or avatar.

DecayedZombie used a similar effect on his Niagra Falls sig. Maybe he could share his steps if they're different than mine.

Happy Gimping!

:s: I am lost on the last step.. I can't even find the "Hard Light" or any of the other modes. Also, Art how did you get your layers to appear like they do in Photoshop? I noticed while looking at your 2nd to last picture all your layers were visible.

Thanks, Herd

Go to Diaologs>Layers and a box will appear and it will have your sig and above that will havr the Opacity and above that is the modes. Click on that and scroll down to "Hard Light"

Nice job, goherd35 and welcome to the boards!

To center a layer, cut and paste the layer and it will be put back in the image in the dead center. Then, make sure that the text layer is active (click on it) and then click on the image window to make it active and use the arrow keys to move to the desired location.

There's probably an easier way, but I don't know all the tricks! :w:

Keep your render window open and open up a your background in a new GIMP window. You can then drag/drop and copy/paste the render into the background.

The render I have has white on it, so when i try to copy and paste.. the white goes with it. Is there any way I can get rid of the white and still keep the pic?

Use the magic wand tool and click the white background. Then Ctrl-k to delete.

Gotta go! IT'S HOCKEY TIME!

I finally got around to making a sig with this photomanipulation. I love it, and it was real quick. It's the text that took a while to get just right.
