No, it's not useless. It has the potential to be a great tutorial with just some minor tweaks.
First of all, instead of telling your readers what they'll be making, show them. Give them the final product up front.
I liked your approach of using an existing background to create the User Bar base. It's very colorful and is something that's easily obtained. Unfortunately, the graphic is too small to cover the width of the user bar. I didn't realize until just now that the area under the words Firefox User are actually part of the user bar. So, either cut/paste/blend other parts of the original background into that user bar layer to make it look like it's all one -OR- bucket fill the white space with an appropriate color -OR- choose a new graphic. I'd go with the cut/paste/blend option, but that's me.
Tell your readers how to accomplish selecting an area of the image. For example, you didn't tell them to use the rectangle selection tool.
Next, adjust the Firefox User text to fit within the bounds of the User Bar. The shadows extend beyond the edges of the graphic. That's a no-no!
Stroke the outside with a one-pixel stroke. It's a nice touch.
That'd be all that I would do, but you could add a elliptical highlight to the top or maybe a diagonal line pattern to the image.
I have one recommendation for you: Try incorporating a few of my suggestions into your tutorial before you move on to another and it will be a success!
