Prior Note

During this tutorial I will be making use of a "lava" pattern. This is not a default pattern included with the program but rather a custom made pattern. It is part of my
Pattern Set 1. A png substitute (which can be copied and pasted in) can be found here. You can try other patterns if you wish, but I was unable to get a satisfactory result with the few other patterns I tried.

-----

OK, welcome to yet another tutorial from me. Here you will learn how to emulate this effect:

Image

Step 1

Alright, let's get to work. File > New from the main toolbox. Set your canvas size and OK it. Rename the background layer to "Lava" and fill with the lava pattern. Desaturate the layer.

Image

Step 2

Bring in your render (File > Open as Layer). Resize and position centrally.

Image

Step 3

Duplicate your render layer once. Take the bottom of the two, desaturate it.and go to Layer > Layer to Image Size. Duplicate this layer 5 times (all duplicates should appear under the coloured render layer, which is what we want). Now, going from top to bottom, name the render layers thusly:

Main Render
Left
Right
Mid Left
Mid Right
Far Left
Far Right.

Your Layers Dialogue should look like this:

Image

Step 4

Now we need to reposition the desaturated render layers. On each layer listed go to Layer > Transform > Offset, and set the x value to the shown value. Leave y alone.

Left: -20
Right: 20
Mid Left: -40
Mid Right: 40
Far Left: -60
Far Right: 60

Image

Step 5

Make "Left" the active layer. Go to Filters > Map > Displace. Set both dropdowns to "Lava", x to -20, y to -20 and On Edges to Smear. OK it. Now run the same filter with the same settings on Mid Left twice and Far Left 3 times.

Image

Step 6

Make "Right" the active layer. Go to Filters > Map > Displace. Set both dropdowns to "Lava", x to 20, y to -20 and On Edges to Smear. OK it. Now run the same filter with the same settings on Mid Right twice and Far Right 3 times.

Image

Extra Note

If there's too much detail left in "Left" or "Right" layers don't be afraid to run displace on those layers again.

Step 7

Make a new layer called Sparks and fill with the Sparks Brush until it is filled. An alternative is to use the Sparks Pattern from my Pattern Set 1.

Image

Step 8

Hide the Sparks layer. Duplicate the Lava layer twice. Use the rectangle select to select the right half of the image. Make sure "Lava copy" is active and delete selection. Invert selection, make "Lava copy #1" active and delete selection. Image currently doesn't look any different.

Step 9

Select "Lava copy" and go to Filters > Map > Displace. Set both dropdowns to the Sparks layer, x to 20, y to 20 and On Edges to Smear. Run this twice on the layer. Go to "Lava copy #1", reopen the displace filter and change the x value to -20. Run this twice on the layer.

Image

Step 10

Time to give a bit of definition to our focal point. Merge Lava copy #1 down onto the Lava copy layer. Now duplicate it and change the layer mode of the duplicate to Burn.

Image

Step 11

Set up the opacity settings of the following layers as follows:

Mid Left – 50%
Mid Right – 50%
Far Left – 30%
Far Right – 30%

Image

Step 12

Hide the Main Render layer and do an Edit > Copy Visible. Reshow the Main Render layer, then paste in the copy as a new layer. Name this layer "Blending". Alpha to Selection the Main Render layer, then shift focus to the Blending Layer. Shrink selection (Select > Shrink) by 3 pixels. Go to Select > Feather and set the amount to 30 and OK it. Now delete the selection.

Image

Step 13

Duplicate the Blending layer and call it "Blending Colour". Go to Filters > Colours > Colorfy and pick a colour that fits your render (I picked purple). Set layer mode to Colour. Choose an opacity that fits.

Image

Step 14

Duplicate the Main Render layer (call it Render Colour). Run the same colorfy filter again. Set this layer mode to colour but make sure the opacity is not 100% (I used 60% opacity).

Image

Step 15

Copy visible and paste as new layer. Set layer mode to overlay. If your render becomes a little washed out create a new layer filled with black and position over the render and set to overlay and adjust opacity.

Image

And that's it. Everything else is basically finishing touches like text and border.

Who says the outcome isn't good? I tweaked a few things like the backround and did some further things like a small bit of brushing and mine looks fine to me.

My outcome:

Ah well. It could have gone worse. It seems I don't have the Lava pattern installed. So I improvised, and now it looks really bad. Great tutorial, but I'm sorry I couldn't follow it properly.

My (dodgy) result:

There's a png image file substitute linked from the "Prior Note", which is basically a 200x600 canvas filled with the lava pattern.

I did this tut again. I realized that in my first attempt, I accidentally skipped the "Render Color" step. I think this one looks better.

And by the way, I like your font, FullMetalEnvy. What was it?

IP, why don't you ever 'officialize' your tutorials? They're really well explained and it gives great results :w:

Well, you don't really colour those layers. They stay desaturated forever and ever. You start colouring at step 13.
