I am using GIMP 2.2.8

Image

1.file>new (white layer) >pick a size that you are going to use
2.get some grunge brushes and brush away make sure to leave some white spots (only a couple)
like so:
Image

3.next take a render and stick it on like so:
Image

4.next make a new layer and find a gradient that matches your renders overall color
5.stroke that across the image put the render above the gradient layer we ill call it
6. next make a new layer and find the second overall color (if there isn't skip this step) storke that gradient accross but this time in a different angle put that layer above the render and put it on overlay. (it is ok to experiment with what angle you wan't to stroke across)
after those steps you should have something like this:
Image

TIP: IF THE SECONDARY COLOR IS vERY BRIGHT TONE THE OPACITY DONE A BIT

7. go to the background layer and go to layer>colors>color balance and set that color to the primary color of the render don't set it too high you still wan't the multi coloring of the secondary color

after that you should have something like this:
Image

thats it put some text and a border and you got yourself a pretty decent multicolored sig

finished product (at top of page and also):

Nice tutorial. The over all effect is pretty good. Two ways to do one thing. Thank you for sharing with us!

Click on the underlined text of the brush name in that post. It will take you to deviantART.

Below the preview picture of the brush set there is a link that says download to desktop. Click it!

Up will pop a little box asking where you want to save the file on you hard drive. Pick a spot, some place that you woun't forget. Click ok and poof it will start downloading for ya!

There's link under the picture of the brushes at DeviantArt that says "Download to Desktop". That's the one you want to select.

As far as installing brushes, I'll let you use the Gimptalk.com Google Search (in the upper right-hand corner of the webpage) to find that. :w:

can you see your brushes or is there absolutely nothing?

the order shouold be like this:

1. Render
2.the new layer
3.brushed background

check to see what color you are using again to make sure it's you primary color

you need to set a layer mode (overlay, screen, colour etc) for the gradient layer.

Spanky i think you missed that bit out.

We could use a little hint on how to 'brush' with the GIMP in the tutorial section, I remember sitting in front of the screen wondering what 'brush away' was supposed to mean (lol).

I would gladly try to explain how to "brush". I can try to make a tutorial but it is more of a trail and error type of thing, There is some tech to but not a lot!!

It would just be good to give them the basics and let them go off from there. Brushing is fun and it just seems like a waste if some don't know how to do it.

Why not check the Resources section here. Droz and I have converted roughly 150+ sets of Photoshop brushes to GIMP. I'm sure you can find something there that interests you!
