I'm having two problems
1) Applying a glittered border to an image/sig, and
2) Apply glittered text to an image/sig?

I've browsed through the tutorials area and found a few tutorials on how to make glittered text, and an animated border highlight, but I can't seem to follow the animated border highlight tutorial and apply it to the glitter. If I overlooked a tutorial relating to this please link it to me. Any other advice or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, Opal.

If this is what you're after as far as a glitter border, here's the steps.

Image

Very simple. I assume you used this tutorial as a basis for your current sig: http://www.gimptalk.com/forum/topic/Glitter-Text-2474-1.html#16344 If so, you'll be familiar with turning the glitter into patterns. If you've used another method, please become familiar with the tutorial I provided the link to, because that's what I'm working from.

Open your sig background. I'm using a plain white layer....forgive me! :l:
Add 3 new layers above your background and fill each new layer with the glitter patterns. If there are more than 3 glitter patterns, please create the same number of new layers to match the number of patterns. You should have a layer window that looks something like this:

Image

Now, in the layer dialog window, highlight the second layer from the bottom and go to the Select menu and choose All.
Then, go to the Select Menu again and choose Shrink. Put in a number for your border width. I used 5.
Next, click control-K to delete the remaining selection.
Now, click on the next layer up and do a Ctrl-K again (the selection should still be active. If not, do the selection steps again)
Continue until your glitter layers have large transparent areas in the middle. Your layers should now look like so:

Image

Next, click on the first glitter layer from the bottom and go to Layer > Merge Down to combine it with the background layer.
Finally, double-click each layer name and type in the "(combine)" at the end of each layer name:

Image

Go to Filters > Animation > Playback to see what it looks like. If you like it save as a gif. If not, fix it until you do!

I don't have time to discuss the text thing in depth. It's really straightforward (very similar to many of the above steps), but I don't have the time right now. If noone helps you, I'll try to get back with you later this evening.

Cheers!

Ok, I've got a little time before heading off to bed, but I'll try to explain adding glitter text to a background, but I'm gonna try not to use screenshots...just too tired this evening. Let's give this a whirl.....

If you've already got your glitter text created...like your current signature. Open it up in GIMP and change the Image Mode to RGB.(from the image window Image > Mode > RGB)
Now, if you have a sig already made and you know the image size of it in pixels, go to Image > Canvas Size and change the pixel settings to match those of your sig background. You may have to deselect the chain button to get the changes to work.
Next, add your sig as a layer to your resized glitter text image (File > Open as Layer) and drag the sig background to the very bottom.
If your text is too big and you want to resize the text layers, click on the "chains" next to each text layer in the layer dialog window to link them together and resize them using the scale button or Layer > Scale Layer menu. Because the text layers are linked, they'll all be resized together.
You can now move the text if you need to using the move tool button (4 headed arrow)
Now, with the changes in place, merge the bottom text layer to the background layer and and change the layer names just like we did above. I've used the same screenshot, but you get the idea.

Image

Now, test your animation Filters > Animation > Playback and save it if you like what you see. If not, fix what you don't like and then save.

Does this help?

Fencepost, thank you so much for taking the time to do this, and helping me learn how to apply a glittered border to an image :l:

No problem....glad to have been of help! Evidently I was typing my second response to you while you were working on the first. So, just in case you missed it, I've added the text portion.

I'm off to bed. If you have any questions, just post them here and I'll check back with you tomorrow.

Cheers!

HELP!!

I have tried to follow all the steps of the tutorial several times but it does not work.
When I have the text layer and the background layer, I merge them to one layer.
Then I duplicate it twice and put in the 3 patterns in the 3 layers.
Then the whole image gets glittery, not only the tekst! What did I do wrong?

Perchance are you editing your image in Indexed mode? If so, convert to RGB Mode before adding the glitter.

Before or after you save as Gif?

If that happen AFTER , If still you have your animation in RGB mode and there are no chicken pox on faces here how to solve

Go to image/image/mode ,chose index, but for dithering chose NONE
Then save as animated Gif as usually

If that happen BEFORE then i can't help, sorry

Hey I managed to get glitter text finally... but now I'm not sure how to get my glitter fill patterns into the layer above my background. I want to add a glitter border around an already made banner, is this possible? If so how? Thanks, oh and the banner doesn't have animation on it... Thanks in advance... W! Oh here's the image I'm trying to add my border around:
