Thanks to fencepost for acting as editor.

Sparkle text.

First, find a glitter fill pattern that you like. I googled "animated glitter .gif" and found about a gazillion. The one I'm using came from here: http://members.tripod.com/~osodeoro/Spa ... elies.html

Unzip/Save the .gif to an easily accessible location, such as your desktop. Open in Gimp.

1. Change Image Mode to RGB. This is important! Indexed Mode will not allow you to make changes.

Image

2. Rename each layer Glitter1, Glitter2, Glitter3
3. Select each layer. Script-fu/Selection/To Pattern. The Pattern Dialogue should automatically update. You can close the .gif or just minimize it.
This is what you should have so far:
Image

Now, open a new image, any size, Transparent.
1. Create your text and place where you want it on your background. Merge the two layers.
Image

In the Layers Dialogue, check the Preserve Transparency box.
Image

2. Duplicate the Background layer twice. At this point, I like to make the layers I'm not working on invisible. I work from the bottom up, so turn off the top two layers and select the background.

Image

3. Open the Patterns dialog and find your glitter fills (Glitter1, Glitter2, Glitter3)
4. Click on Glitter1 and drag it over your text.
5. Turn on Visibility on your second layer and repeat the fill with Glitter2
6. Turn on Visibility on the third (top) layer; repeat Step 5 with Glitter3.

Almost done!
> Change Image Mode to Indexed
> Filters/Animation/Optimize for GIF
> Filters/Animation/Playback

If it looks good, close the Playback window and save as a .gif

Thanks for the tutorial! It's so funny how last night I was planning on making the exact same tutorial. But that's ok because I'm sure you did a much better job at explaining it than I would have. I think that adding a 2 pixel stroke makes the outcome look nice as well.

Good job! Thanks for contributing...I found your tutorial quite interesting, and might use it in my work sometime. I particularily found it very informative how you animated the text. Thanks!

hi, i hope you can help me! i am following this tutorial and when i try to fill the text, it covers the text and fills the whole box...do you know what i should do to make it fill just the text? thanks!

edit--ok i used 'selection editor' and i got the text filled, and got the whole thing done. but with that one i used three different color glitter frames...when i try to do it with one color glitter (3 frames), i script-fu each frame to pattern, but when i go to fill the text, only one frame of the glitter is in my patterns....

please help!

If I'm correct, visibility is the eye icon(s) on the Layers box.

Hello, I'm new to GIMP and to Gimpt talk... But I've been following lots of tutorials and know how to make some really cool stuff, so I learn pretty fast.

But anyway, I'm having a problem with saving a new pattern as described in this tutorial. Every time I save one, it saves to the patterns area, but, after I save another one, it overlapps onto the previously saved one and that one is nowhere to be found. I'm unable to save more than one pattern.

Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks so much. :l:

Are the file names different like pattern1, pattern2, and pattern3 or whatever?

Yes... But I can't get it to look like their example with more than one of the same color glitter. It's as though they're overlapping and I don't think they're supposed to do that.

I'm having the same problem. All that's left is "Glitter3" in my pattern box ...

I didn't feel like figuring out what was wrong when that kept happening, so I just split all the layers of the glitter into individual images.

My result: Image
