racertj5 hi and thanks for trying out the tutorial. Actually it is supposed to assist in providing a reduced size for the final GIF animation file. Here is a link that tries to explain a bit more about that:

A bit more information would be helpful. What is the exact error message? Does it do it when you try to start the move path, or after you have set up your move path and click okay? Is it perhaps telling you that you don't have the amount of frames needed? I have run into that error a time or two when I miscalculated how many frames I had.

no, when i hit the move path, it gives me a windows error with the program...well, you can see...ill have to double post because its 2 different errors..

those are the 2 errors...then when i try it again, it says "move path cannot execute more than 1 video function on the same frame at the same time. Locking Image_id:1"

all im really trying to do is speed up the motion of an image, and once it reaches the end, make it play backwards...like running forward, then running backwards and then forwards again in a loop then reversal loop.

Im also trying to do things like the spiderman sig on the first page of this thread....if you could please take me under your gimp teaching wings, i would be much obliged...

Yup, looking at the screenshot you posted, you have your first frame with 51 layers. Really, for what you are trying to do, Move Path is not the right tool to use.

You should first open your file, then probably save it back out under a different name, since it might be getting confused by the fact that you have given it a "video frame" name, i.e. with the _000001.xcf. It isn't a video frame, it is the full video!

Name it something like "video.xcf", and put it in a folder all by itself.

Now do Video>Split Image to Frames. This will generate 51 separate .xcf files in that folder, each one will be a different frame of video. It should make a new image called frame_000001.xcf with JUST the very first frame of the animation.

Now, in that frame, do Video>Frames to Image, and change the timing value to 15 (the timing value is in an input box at the top of the dialog). This will generate a new multi layer image with the timings changed. Save that one out as an .xcf with whatever filename you want.

Now, from that same multi-Layer Image, Do File>Save a Copy and save as .gif. Check the box for animation. In the new dialog that comes up, you can probably get away with just clicking Okay, but if you want to be fussy, change the mode from "I don't Care" to "Replace."

I saw your image... it looks like the yellow square is transitioning out of the image before it reaches the end. I'm not sure about what to do, but I understand the issue.

I have a question about more advanced uses of GAP.

Say I have sprites, like these

And I want to use the 3 in the top right, labelled sideways. Say I want the infantry marching across the screen like the box. The problem is, your tutorial shows what to do when you want to move a single image, not four images in succession.

Is there a tutorial to show me that or can you tell me here?

Thanks for the help

Thank you, ccbarr, you are great and I am clumsy- My box doesn't run, it doesn´t let the left side, only extends. Where did I misstake?
[EDITED] I uploaded my bad moving box, but it doesn't seem. Would somebody explain or give me a link, how to upload images in this forum?

[EDITED again] Ooops, I did it again. Now I have a moving box, maybe because I hade white background to the second image, and first time it was transparent I think it would be better to mention in the tut that it must be white background.
But now I have black moving box, even the screen around the background is black and the background is white. Why?
Another problem: When I open the video>path, the source image/layer shows as Untitled of course and not a .png as on the illustration, because you don't say anywhere to save something as .png image. It is disturbing, it took time to check if I did something wrong. No, I didn't untill there. But I did somewhere else, because I have no colors.

ps. Would somebody explain or give me a link, how to upload images in this forum? (To push the upload was not enough)

Ivan hi and thank you for trying out the tutorial. Also thank you for your valuable input. Let me respond to your concerns:

QUOTE:

I just corrected that portion of the tutorial and thank you for noticing and informing me so I could correct the error.

Yes, if you look at the Move Path images in the tutorial, you will indeed see box2.png-1266 and then a forward slash (/), followed by the Layer name and an ID number (yours will be unique to your Gimp application) for example, in the first Move Path window shown it shows:

box2.png-1266/Box1-11004

Again, your confusion is understandable, since your results will not be exactly the same. I named the image with the box layers box2.png so that I could save the various images to add to the tutorial. That was an oversight on my part. It would have been better for me to take screenshots of Move Path window with the Layers before naming that particular image. I will try to clarify that issue and update the images. My apologies.

Let me provide a bit more in depth detail about that particular issue. That section of the Move Path window is called Source Image/Layer . This means it will include first the Image name (thus the Image part - my image is arbitrarily named box2.png since I was using it for screenshots for the tutorial) followed by a unique ID number. It is then followed by a forward slash (/) and then the Layer name (hence the Layer portion, in the above paragraph, it is Box1 followed by a unique ID number which varies for each person running the software).

Finally, if you have no colors, make sure that your images are in RGB Mode and not Greyscale or Indexed:

Found under Image | Mode in your image window.

Again, I appreciate the feedback, even when things do not go right. That way, I can attempt to explain the problem and eventually correct it for the tutorial. It is important to me that others be able to follow the tutorial. I'm very glad that you are someone who pays attention to details. If you notice any other problems with the tutorial, please feel free to post them as well. That is the spirit of open source in my opinion. Just as with coding, one person may make the code open source, but then others can make corrections to improve the code for everyone, so too with my tutorials. Again, my apologies for any confusion, thanks for trying the tutorial and hope these explanations help some.

Thank you ccbar for your long and instructive answer, I shall make it again.

And now something to the webmaster:

1 Whenever I tried, I couldn't load an image. I could browse it, could see a thumbnail, and than upload - vanished. What can I do?
2 It would be easier to find a comment If we had tutorial first, comments after. Just in this topic the comments don't interrupt the tutorial, but there are some longer tutorials with a few comment hanging under a part of tutorial on every side. This is rift in the lute (I hope it is the right expression, I found it in the dictionary) both when I follow the tut, but mostly when I search a comment. Scroll down, next page, scroll down again... Wouldn't be better to have tutorial topic and just connected to every tutorials a comment-topic? If you keep this Post Reply to Topic, every comments would submitted automatically to the belonging coment-topic

For the second tutorial (and possibly the third one), I'm having a bad time with the Fill with selection part, and gives me this kind of image, and I don't know what I did wrong. Can you guys help me? Thanks.

mimi_girl hi,

Can you explain a bit more about the kind of trouble you are having with being told to fill the selection? There are multiple ways to fill a selection with color. I indicated two in the tutorial. One way is to use the Bucket Fill Tool and the other is to just drag the color from the main Gimp toolbar window over to the selection.

Since you said that you had a problem in part 2, did you make sure to do Alpha to Selection as I indicated in the tutorial?

If there is something that you don't understand in the tutorial, please let me know. I can try to explain it to you to try to help you out. One general recommendation that I have is to please follow the tutorial slowly and thoroughly. Learning to use GAP takes some time, and if you miss a step in the tutorial, it will definitely affect your results.

Other than that, if you are confused about something, I will do my best to help you out.

Thank you for trying out the tutorial.

Hi, ccbarr, great Tut, It took me some time to make it work. Stage One is a "doddle" but I got lost trying to add the second stage. I kept getting an Empty Source /Image layer and was unable to add the new layer. Later on it seemed to work. Now for some heavy experimenting with some of the options. Thank you!

wbool63 thank you for trying the tutorial. Glad it did finally work for you. Looks like you are progressing nicely given the animation you posted.

I'm having a little problem getting my animation to work. I complete the first several steps, all the way to the Anim Preview and everything looks fine. I close it out and click "don't save", then I click OK on the Move Path window. As the window processes, I get this error message

"Procedure 'gimp-image-delete' has been called with an invalid ID for argument 'image'. Most likely a plug-in is trying to work on an image that doesn't exist any longer."

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

And I would like add, since it is talking about a invalid ID, the Source Image/Layer is giving me this to select from "Box1.xcf-8/Box1-22". Shouldn't my ID number be different?

Edit: Never mind, I was able to fix my problem, but thanks for the tutorial.

Is there a way to make the impact point opaque? I've tried with one more and one less frame, but the main frame is the first beginning of transparency.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about. Where I have it paused, you can see the lower frames showing through a little. It's no biggy and it works, but it's bothering me.

****LATER****

Never mind. I made a new one of just 4 frames without transparency, copied the opaque point of impact and pasted it into my original one. I left the slightly transparent one, too, but made it the same speed as the rest of the frames and made the opaque one 700ms..

Oregonian, nice little animation. I have set you a PM answering this question, since it does involve some detail when using GAP to achieve your desired result.

Edit: Just now seeing you have fixed the issue for your animation. Guess you can disregard my PM then.

LOL I'm working on a smaller one and I'm going to use the instructions about the transparency. Gonna lick this thing yet.

Thank you.
