Hi,

I'm new to GIMP and to this list, so please excuse my dumb questions.

I tried to open a whole bunch of .eps files and and none of them would open - all I get is three separate error messages! I thought The Gimp could open these - am I wrong? Is there something special I need to do?

TiA

Richard

No, he's correct. It's listed in the GIMP dropdown list as a file GIMP can open. I've heard of EPS, but haven't had the opportunity to use them.

Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) is a standard file format for importing and exporting PostScript files.

convert them to some other file format. Check google "convert eps png OR jpg OR ps OR blah blah blah".

GIMP is capable of opening EPS files if ghostscript is installed on your system.

[*] Download Ghostscript from following url for your operating systm.
(download Download gs851w32.exe if using ms-windows)
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=1897&package_id=1845&release_id=321615

[*] Install it, go to /bin directory of where you installed ghostscript
[*] copy all exe files (may be 2 or 3 etc) and paste in gimp's roo directory (where gimp is installed)
[*] restart gimp and try opeing eps, ps, pdf etc files

I hope it helps.

Hello everyone!

I have had the same problem as IPA and I followed the solution of Ali Imram with great gratefulness.

There is only one change to this line of Ali's answer:

Quote:
copy all exe files (may be 2 or 3 etc) and paste in gimp's roo directory (where gimp is installed)

It has to be Gimps /bin directory, not the root directory.

Thank you and bye

Ali

thanks for your advice above re copying the ghostscript executables into the gimp bin folder - very helpful.

at the risk of telling everyone something thats completely obvious, as the eps file is a vector file. it can be made larger at no loss of quality, but this needs to be done at the point of importing.

all you need to do is to increase the resolution value on the import dialog (from default of 100%) BUT you will also need to increase the width and height values by the same factor that you increase the resolution by. (if you only increase the resolution & not the W & H, then the image is cropped)

I'm being greedy now, but having imported my (eps) image into gimp, its all rendered on a single layer whereas the eps file was multi layer.

Is there any way to import an eps file and KEEP the layers separate?

thanks,
John

Hello!
I'm new to this too and just got those 3 error messages on trying to open an eps file. Sorry to be so ignorant, but what/where is the \bin directory? I'm using Windows.
Thanks very much!
Catherine

Sorry! Just answered my own question! I was looking in the directory where I'd saved the files. 'bin' is actually in the Program Files!
Seems to work now!

I did it on Windows and it works perfectly well. Now, how do I get it to run on Linux (Ubuntu)?

Ok, to make this a little more easy:

Install the program from Ali Imran's post...go to my computer, c drive, (or whatever your main drive is), program files, "gs", gs8.51, bin. Now you are in the Ghostscript BIN folder, highlight "gswin32 and win32c", right click, click on copy. Now start over : my computer, program files, gimp-2.0 (whatever version you have), bin, now you are in GIMP's BIN folder, simply right click and click on Paste... Ghostscript is now installed into GIMP, you can close the directory window, open up GIMP and start working with those elusive .eps files! Enjoy!

My Computer ...................................................My Computer
......Program files...................................................Program files
................GS...............................................................Gimp-2.0
....................GS8.51.................................................................Bin
...........................Bin
...............................GSwin32 and Win32c <------copy--------paste-------->

I've done all of the above on an XP machine but I'm still getting an error (well, the last two of the three errors, could not open file). Could not interpret, opening file failed.

I've stuck the exe's in the Gimp's bin but gimp-win.sourceforge.net also recommends setting GS_PROG to point to the pathname. But I don't seem to have anything called that--- it's a variable, where does it sit?* Sounds like a UNIX thing like $TERM. Also, the pasted files seem to not act like they're actually in the folder. They sit exactly wherever I place them rather than the folder rearranging its files...** Heck, just to be safe I stuck copies of the libs in there too. No cigar.

Up to this point I've been making .eps's blindly and sending them to printers, meaning I can't tell what's wrong when the printer says there's a problem. I don't have Photoshop, only Flash : ( Nobody accepts .svg's or we could all just use Inkscape and be done with it : )

*Edit I did find an extremely old forum post (somewheres else) which described setting environment variables which I set, however another person on that forum said that those will not be looked at by GIMP. The other solutions involved autoexec.bat which as I understand XP does not even use anymore (I sure don't have one). Sux0rs that I'm not very familiar with Windows.

**after shutdown and restart the files at least seemed to have rearranged themselves. Still, all user accounts on this machine are getting two errors in GIMP. I wish the error messages gave me a better idea of what's wrong!
