Hello guys,

Creating a CD disk in gimp requires a few quick steps. After you have practiced this tutorial you will be able to create one within 2 or 5 minutes.

Expected result

Image

SOLID STEPS

[*] Start with new empty gimp image of 300x300, you may start with desired, I started with 300 : width and 300 : height.

[*] Insert 2 (two) new layers, name the top most layer colors and name the 2nd layer disk.

[*] Draw an elliptic selection using circular area selection tool, as shown here:

Image

[*] Select layer disk. Select Gradient fill tool and choose Golden Gradient from gradients' list. Then, go to gradient tool options and select the menu item Conical (sym), this drop down list is labeled Shape:, as shown here:

Image

[*] Now keep your mouse cursor in the middle of the selection press left mouse button, and keep it down, drag mouse cursor streight down and release the button, as shown in below fig:

Image

Now your image must look as below (upto now):

Image

NOTE : Keep the selection active.

[*] Go again to gradients, and select gradient named Full saturation spectrum CCW from gradients list. Select top layer we named colors and fill it the same way we filled the other layer (middle to bottom), and set layer Opacity to 25. Now your image must look like this:

Image

NOTE : It is time to save the selection so that it can be used later. Save selection using menus within the image : Select > Save to Channel.

[*] Now Select layer named disk and go through menus Select > Shrink, another window will appear asking you the number of pixels to shrink down current selection, you enter 5 and click button OK.

[*] Go through menus Select > Invert, then click icon Brightness and contrast Image on the main window of gimp, and click within your image window. Another window will appear, drag the upper scrollbar of Brightness to maximum 127 and click button OK, then select second layer colors and set its brightness to 127 the same way we did for othe layer.

[*] Invert the selection again by going through menus Select > Invert, then again shrink the layer by going through menus Select > Shrink and giving it value of 100 pixels.

[*] Save selection by going through menus Select > Save to Channel.

[*] Select layer colors and press Ctrl+X on image window.

[*] You see the selection is also gone, go to Channels tab rightclick the channel on top (the small circle) and click menu Channel to Selection. Which will restore the small circle selection we made priorly.

[*] Select layer named disk and press Ctrl+X on the image window. Selection is again gone, repeat previous step to bring it back.

[*] Now grow the selection by 5 pixels, by going through menus Select > Grow, enter value 5 and click button OK.

[*] Again click brightness icon, and turn the brightness to maximim 127 for both layers.

Your final image must look something like this:

If you look at this screeny i've selected the gradient tool and the box with the gradient in is a drop-down menu, click on it at scroll down, the gradient should be there.

That happened after last final forum upgrade, and fixes automatically when user revisits.
It is because in our last forum we had data time stored in string, and some formats could not be converted properly.

Not a big issue, I hope further discussion goes regarding tutorial.

I'm embarrassed to say I am having a problem doing this.
I am messing up from the beginning. I start with new blank (I think from the look it is supposed to be white) then add the two layers.
I set up the gradient as instructed but when I do like it says the color goes beyond the edges of the selection.
Any clue what might cause this. I am new at this stuff and quite clueless so speak slowly. :l:

Thanks.
