Start Gimp and create new document of 320x320 [width x height], from menus File > New, or simply press Ctrl+N.

Go to Layers Tab, and Insert new layer of any type, by rightclicking in the layers view and selecting menu item New Layer as shown below:

A dialog for inserting New Layer will appear you simply click button OK. After that action a new layer will appear (in Layers Tab) over the layer named Background, as shown below:



Now in the same window click the Patterns Tab, choose desired patern with left mouse click and keep mouse button pressed, and drag it to the Image Window, then release the mouse button. You will notice that the new layer is filled with that pattern, as shown here:



In the Image Window, go through menus Filters > Map > Map Object, as shown here:



A new window will appear, in which you first have to select map type to Cylinder, then check two check boxes Show preview wireframe and Transparent background, as shown in following image:



Then go to Cylinder Tab within same window, adjust desired radius and length and click Preview button to make sure it is of desired structure, see image below:



You may also go to Orientation Tab to change postion and 3D rotation of the cylinder object. This is a perfect feature of GIMP, that it does not require much knowledge to create a cylinder, if the user is unaware of what value are to be set, see Orientation Tab below:



Now click button OK, and your quick cylinder is ready in the image window, as shwon here:

Hi Ali! I'm back :h: Got a question... is the Map to Object limited to just the four objects (cylinder, box, plane, and sphere)? Are there any downloadable plugins to add objects?

I have been looking for the same feature since 2 months, but ended up with some photohop plugins, the remarkable plugin is ModelShop which allows import of 3d files didrectly into photoshop, but seems to be not working with gimp. But I suggest you use cylinders, spheres and cubes to draw desired shapes and to ahieve custom shape bend them, give them curves by goin through menus Filters > Distort > Curve bend within the image window. I know it is not suficient but helps achieving the goal somehow, as I already created terrians using Map Object filter, see attached image:
