Well, as promised here are techniques I use to create spike-looking brushes like iceytina's on Deviantart.com. Due to time constraints, I'm only including a final screenshot of my output. You can figure out the rest.

[*]Open up a new RGB image - transparent
[*]Set your colors back to black and white. (If black is the forefround, more black will appear and vise versa for white)
[*]Now, Filters | Render | Nature | Flame
[*]Under Render tab, select "Custom Gradient" For now, don`t change anything else, but you can experiment later.
[*]Under Camera tab, adjust the zoom of the flame to fit the screen as desired (may have to adjust again after the next step)
[*]Click the Edit tab at the top of the window
[*]Under Variation, click linear
[*]Play with the speed, randomize and direction buttons.

I don`t understand the direction button entirely, but the middle one is the one that will be rendered. Those that are around it are variations of it. If you like one of the variations better than that middle one, click on it, and now it becomes the middle. Keep playing with the settings until you get one you like.

[*]Click Ok and readjust the zoom and x/y settings to fit the render where you want it to be positioned on the screen.
[*]You can also save your settings for later use within the flame window.
[*]Exit out of the Flames tool.
[*]Convert image to grayscale (Image | Mode | Grayscale)
[*]Flatten your image .... Image | Flatten Image
[*]Save it as a .gbr brush in your gimp brush folder.
[*]Save your xcf file if you want to edit it later.
[*]Refresh you brushes and start brushing!

Here`s a pic of my brush!

Image

The background is actually transparent. I don`t know how it`s showing up for you, but it should be clear.

Y'all owe me for sharing this secret! I was going to keep it to myself. :w:

Hi, Decayedzombie. Welcome to gimptalk!

Are you using Windows? I'm familiar with windows. If so, your brushes folder should be located here: C:\\Program Files\\GIMP-2.0\\share\\gimp\\2.0\\brushes or something very similar. That's where you want to save it to. Then hit the refresh button in the brushes toolbar.

Does that help?

Now would you know how to get there? I don't know if i got that when i downloaded it. When i got to save any other picture it has te options to "Browse For Other Folders" or "Select File Type(By Extension)". when I'm trying to save it, it only has "Browse For Other Folders". I don't know how to get to the Select File Type part.

Hmmm. Very strange. Saving a brush is really no different than anything else.

Is it possible for you to post a screenshot of the dialog box in question?

Easy, Chief. Trying to be helpful here. I'm pretty good, but don't read minds. :w:

When you select "save as", a new window will open up and their will be a "Browse for other folders" item with a little "+" symbol next to it. Click the "+" symbol and this window will appear:

Image

Then double-click your "C" drive (or whatever drive GIMP is installed on) and then double-click programs, then GIMP, etc. etc.

Yeah I have had that happen a couple of times. Make sure your brush is either grayscale (image->mode->grayscale) or RGBA (layer-> transparency->Add Alpha Channel).

Art yeah I was wondering. Thanks cause I have been trying to figure out why I have this extra drive too.

Mine mine will do that sometimes just close and restart gimp and if you saved them right they should show up.Keep in mind the gimp brushes folder will get full sooner or later so you should learn to make new folders for your brushes same goes for the fonts :h:

There's some on deviantart, but I don't know anything how/if they can transfer over to Macromedia, as I'm not familiar with the program.

Because the brushes so easy to make in GIMP, unless you find one that you absolutely have to have, I'd just make them instead of downloading them. The nice thing is that the flame plugin allows you to save your settings for recall later. I've been saving my settings, but I'm only using a couple of brushes right now. If other users are saving the settings, maybe you can request their file to import into GIMP.

Just a thought.

I got a question... I have the GIMP 2.2 and I added the brushes from here: http://www.deviantart.com/view/12311264/

I added them in the brushes folder. Though when I refresh the brushes... they are not shown... I am relatively new to the program and brushes. Is there a reason why this is happening?

Unless the brushes are specified as GIMP brushes, they won't work unless they are first converted using the abr2gbr plugin discussed elsewhere on the boards. Also, some Photoshop (*.abr files) and Paint Shop Pro (*.jbr) will not convert. Only the older ones will.

That said, check out the resources section and look at all the posts concerning brushes. There are some excellent links to sites that have abr and jbr files that can be converted. I've also created this excellent tutorial (*pats self on back :w:) and another brush creation tutorial (*tries again to pat self on back, but over stretched rotator cuff last time :l:)

Let me know if you still have problems.

BTW, welcome to the boards!

Here is a pic of my brushes that I can use and the brushes in my folder.

As you can see, the ones that are from devianart.com are showing up there but not under the brushe menu. I refreshed the brushes but it still dosen't work. Any reasons why it is doing this?

I don't have any thoughts right off hand. Have you shut down gimp and restarted? Also, make sure you don't have more than one brush folder. That happened to me when I first started with GIMP and GIMP was not finding the ones I wanted. I moved all the brushes to the same folder, deleted duplicate folder, and pointed gimp in the right direction.
